'Like' other blogs blocked

  • Unknown's avatar

I can comment on other WordPress blogs but when I click Like, I get a shield to sign in, then it tries to connect to this url
    https://wordpress.com/public.api/connect/?action=verify&service=wordpress
    and it just goes blank.

I think it might be something to do with Mozilla Firefox blocking it.
    any ideas anyone?
    thanks, Sarah

    Hi szoutewelle,

Are you trying to comment on a blog using your WordPress.com identity or are you trying to log in via Facebook or Twitter? Both of those services require authentication (as does WordPress.com, if you’re not already logged in). You might have a popup blocker that is preventing the authentication window from appearing.

I use my WordPress identity for commenting on a blog, and that is not a problem.

But when I try to ‘Like’ a blog it doesn’t take. I get a ‘Mozilla Firefox’ shield which starts to sign me in, then just goes blank as described above. If I click on the ‘Like’ button again, I go through the same little dance and simply can’t Like someone’s blog post.

I recently changed my email, the trouble might have started around then, but I just checked and the new one is on my WordPress profile.
    thanks jackie.

    Hi szoutewelle,

That’s an odd issue. Does this happen when you try to like blogs hosted on WordPress.com or on WordPress blogs hosted on other services? You can tell if they’re hosted with us because it will have a reference to WordPress.com in the footer.

    Could you try the following?

    1) Log out of WordPress.com, clear your browser cache, and then log back in.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies

    2) Try a different browser to see if that changes the behavior.

    3) If neither of these work, please take a screenshot and upload it to your WordPress.com blog so we can see what you mean by “‘Mozilla Firefox’ shield”.

    Thanks!

It could also be a Windows system or antivirus blocker that’s causing this problem. You might want to check your security settings and review the settings on any antivirus software you have installed, as your system could be blocking the pop up or preventing the authentication process from completing. In this case a screenshot would be critical for us to be able to tell where the problem is originating.

Hi Jackie, it happens when I try to Like blogs hosted on WordPress.com.

before I tried no. 1 or 3 on your first mail from today, I went to a WordPress blog using our Microsoft Browser instead of Mozilla and there was no problem at all!

To respond to both your posts, I think it is an antivirus blocker working with Mozilla Firefox which is blocking the pop up or preventing the authentication process.
    I’ll do the screenshot.
    thanks so much.

It does sound like you have a setting in Firefox that is preventing the authorization from working. You might try disabling all of your extensions and see if that works for you.

By extensions do you mean virus scans, cookies etc?

Thanks , I think we’ve basically nailed the cause now, I’ll unsubscribe from this thread tomorrow, and for the time being use another browser to ‘Like’ blogs.
I’m removing the screenshot from my blog.
