Like, Reblog and liked list not displaying on blog posts.
-
Like and Reblog buttons have disappeared from my posts (blog page) as well as the list of those who liked the post when using a web browser (tried Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox). The Like button and the list of people who liked this page shows on static home page. Tools Marketing settings for Sharing Buttons look OK – all are turned on. Have tried turning them off and on, changing style (icon, icon & textm etc.) but nothing fixes the issue. How can I fix this? Thanks.

Hi @rxfrazier, it looks like this might be an issue with your theme. I’ll do some testing on our side to confirm, but if you want to “try on” some new themes here to see if any of them would work well for you, I’d recommend that!

Just as an update, this does indeed seem to be theme related. I duplicated it on a test site, and am not having issues there. Did this just start happening recently?

The buttons and the list of likes used to be fine. I don’t know when this issue started since I have taken a hiatus for quite awhile from the blog and only just recently took a look again. You can see how long ago my last activity was from my last post. When I did that last post everything was OK. Sometime between then and now it changed.
So if I understand your theme test you tried the same theme and *did not* see the issue with the Like and Reblog buttons or the display of Likes. So perhaps my copy of the theme is corrupted in some way. You think if I switched to another theme and then switched back it might work OK again? Any recommendation on what alt theme to try that won’t break the pages/layout?
Thanks.

That’s correct. I also tested this now, and those buttons work fine for me using the same theme as you do.
So perhaps my copy of the theme is corrupted in some way.
That’s definitely not the problem – WordPress.com sites don’t each have their own separate installation of the WordPress software and the theme, and all sites using the same theme, share the same installation of that theme. In other words, your site and my test site are accessing the exact same set of files for the Twenty Fourteen theme.
More likely this is a problem with your site’s database – looking at the HTML code for your post in my browser, it appears that your site “thinks” Likes are disabled, as the HTML code for the Like and Reblog buttons module is completely absent.
I’ve tried the following to try and “shake things loose”, but with no luck: Switched Likes and reblogs off and back on in your settings, and tried doing the same on a specific post.
You think if I switched to another theme and then switched back it might work OK again?
That’s the next thing to try. If I preview your site using a different theme the buttons appear, so switching themes might work.
The only layout-aspect of your site that would be impacted by a theme switch is your widget area, so any other theme with a left-sidebar, for example, Twenty Fifteen, should be a safe option to try.

I switched to Twenty Fifteen. A pop-up asked ‘How would you like to use Twenty Fifteen’. Selected ‘Switch theme, preserving my homepage content’. Got the ‘Thanks for choosing Twenty Fifteen by the WordPress team’ pop-up and pressed the ‘View site’ button. A quick look at blog posts and they seemed OK – buttons back and Gravatar pics of ‘likers’ back, too. Then switched back to Twenty Fourteen. This time no pop-up asking ‘How would you like to use Twenty Fourteen’. Just pop-up with ‘Thanks for…’ Clicked ‘Customize Site’ button. Then went to site. Same problem: no like or reblog buttons and no gravatar pics. Repeated and at the customize site area made a small change and saved. No change with issue using this theme. Tried Twenty Fifteen again selecting ‘Replace my homepage content with the Twenty Fifteen homepage.’ Homepage now shows ‘Your latest posts’. Otherwise shows buttons and ‘liker’ pics OK. Changed homepage settings on Twenty Fifteen to ‘A static page’ to restore my original homepage. All working OK. Switched back to Twenty Fourteen. Same result as before. One last try. Switched to Twenty Fifteen with replace homepage choice and then, making no change to Twenty Fifteen, switched back to Twenty Fourteen. Same result on Twenty Fourteen. My site database seems to act OK with Twenty Fifteen but not Twenty Fourteen. Short of going to a new theme, any other suggestions or am I SOL?

P.s., I did also try switching my homepage to ‘Your latest posts’ but that did not fix the issue either.

Hi there,
After a closer look this does appear that it may be an issue with your theme. One thing I noticed that I think we did not catch on our earlier investigations is that all the posts on your site are set using the “image post format” which is a tool we once used for giving posts a unique appearance based on wether it was an image, a video, a standard post, etc. We no longer use that option in our new editor so the feature has been retired.
On this theme the “image post” setting did not do much (posts look the same regardless of the post format you use) but I did notice on the demo site that like buttons are missing from “image” posts like this one: https://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/2013/02/13/image-post-example/
But like buttons appear as normal on standard posts like this one: https://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/2013/11/12/featured-images-really-shine/
So it appears there is a bug with this theme where like buttons do not show on that specific post type. I’ve reported this to our devs, but this is an older theme that does not get as much use these day, so I can’t guarantee when it would be addressed, if at all.
With this in mind, if you would like to continue to use this theme, you can get the like button back by switching to standard posts. Would you like our help with this? We are able to make this change in bulk much faster than I suspect you would be able to update all 400+ posts on your site.
Let us know how you would like to proceed or if you have any questions.

Thanks for the update. I changed the last post on the blog from ‘image’ to ‘standard’ and that seem to do the trick. Buttons etc. are displayed. Then I checked other posts that was not categorized as ‘image’ (I have ‘video’ and ‘gallery’). None of these displays the buttons, etc. As you say, looks like a bug in the theme for all post categories except ‘standard’. Too bad these categorizations make it easy to find those type of posts (link at the top of posting). Oh well.
I changed a ‘video’ post to ‘standard’ and the buttons etc. came back and the post seem to work as before. Changed a ‘gallery’ post, buttons came back and the post looked like before.
Looking at the post editor I see I can add a gallery layout even though the post format is ‘standard’. (The editor suggests changing the post format to ‘gallery’ but it does not seem to change the appearance of the post. Guess it just adds the link I mention above to the top of the post.
Anyway, it looks like a bulk change to ‘standard’ post format will be OK so, yes, I would like you to make that change.
(BTW, ‘jerrysarcastic’ – ha, ha!) And thanks for the help.
