Likes glitchy from the reader

  • Unknown's avatar

I like the new WordPress reader. I have noticed that sometimes I will press “Like” and later will go back and the “Like” is not registered. I have heard others complain about it. Is this issue being addressed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Susie,
I never click “likes” in the Reader because I want the blogger to get a page view stat. So I click into the blog using the little time symbol on the bottom left hand corner and never, ever read any posts at all on the Reader. That said, I don’t have an answer to your question. Another Volunteer may have one but I’ll tag this thread for Staff so it doesn’t fall through the cracks. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

P.S. You will want to make sure you are running one of the browsers and versions of them here http://browsehappy.com and that you have third party cookies enabled.

I too prefer to actually visit posts (same as I’d prefer it for people to do the same for me), but on occasion I don’t if the post is short, or I don’t have time for a full read at the time, and if I Like a post from the reader, the same thing is happening for me too.

I just started having the problem suzielindau is having. It is less downloading if you can read the entire post from the reader and it enables me to reach more of my readers. Having many people to my site and limited time available – this is a MUST. Is support going to answer or be condescending like timethief?

I went back to clicking “Likes” from email. It works every time, it’s much faster way to get to the blog post and the writer gets a view.

    Hi there,

I went through and tested this on several different blog posts from the Reader, and the Likes were registered correctly. If you’re still experiencing this issue @susielindau and @gpcox, can you point me to a blog post that you’re trying to “like” where this is occurring?

    Hi Jeremy!
I just clicked a bunch of Likes through my PC. I refreshed the screen and they’re all unclicked. I would keep checking. I thought it only happened on my iPad and phone. If you click Like and then View Original, the like sticks.
    Thanks,
    Susie

    Hi Susie!

How quickly are you refreshing the Reader after clicking “Like”? I noticed that if I refresh immediately (like a second) after I click the “Like” button, the post is un-Liked. However, if I wait a few seconds and refresh, the “Like” is registered properly. I believe it just takes a few seconds for the “Like” to register properly. Is this the same behavior you’re experiencing?

Ha! I just figured it out. I just clicked “Like” on 10 posts. The first one was clicked for 30 seconds and the last for about two. Then I checked my stats and came back and they were unclicked. I did it twice and both times it unclicked. Try that and let me know if it happens to you.

    @susielindau
As we know each other and follow each others blogs I’m sure sure you will forgive me when I say I would be over the freaking moon if I could disable the like button and the reblog button in the Reader and so would the majority of the commenters on my blogging tips blog, as evidenced by the discussion on my posts regarding the Reader.

I agree Timethief since it doesn’t always work and the writer doesn’t get a view. They disabled the “Stats” button from the drop down menu which really doesn’t make sense.
I noticed that everyone is getting about half as many “Likes” now.
    Thanks for weighing in.

    Hi @susielindau and @timethief,

Currently, it isn’t possible to remove the sharing buttons from your Reader posts.

Susie, I’m still trying to figure this one out. On my side, even if I click “Like” on several posts from the Reader and then refresh immediately, the “Like” stays put provided I’ve allowed 2-3 seconds after the last “Like”. It’s functioning this way on individual posts as well. Have you been able to replicate this across multiple browsers?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Jeremy!
I’m using Chrome which I believe is the most popular browser. That may be why so many are having trouble with the Reader. I haven’t tried it anywhere else.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s interesting. I’m in Chrome as well, and the “Like” sticks every time. Do you notice this only happening with certain blogs or types of posts? Could you send over a link to a post that you recently tried to ‘Like’ and experienced this issue? I’d like to test it out on that particular post and see if it may be related to post types or something post-specific.
