When I click to like a post, my like won’t show up and I get a quick glimpse of a box in the upper left hand corner that immediately disappears before I can read it. I tried to log out and log back in several times, which has fixed it before, but that doesn’t work now. How do I fix this please?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Can you tell me a bit more about your local set up?

    – what browser does this issue happen?
    – does it happen in multiple browsers?
    – operating system and device type.
    – examples or links to posts that have failed.

There’s nothing on the account that would be preventing this.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sure… Thanks for your response…

    – I use Safari only, no other browsers.

    – I’m on a MacBook Pro, mid 2015 15″ retina display with version 10.13.6 of macOS High Sierra.

    – Likes that have failed are on sites: Paul Militaru, oneanna65, Mytwosentences, F.G.M. and zdunno03. I’ve been able to leave likes on all these sites before.

    – It did work on one site – babsje.

I’ve had this happen before and it always resolves when I log out and log in again. I’ve tried this several times but this time that doesn’t work. Please let me know if there’s anything else I need to tell you. Thanks again, Steve

Thanks for sending all that information, it’s a great help.

Would you also be able to send me the full link to the post(s) you are trying to like on these sites?

I’ll then see whether I can replicate what is happening from my side.

Hi – thanks for answering me…

I’m so sorry but I don’t know how to send the links, or even find them. Also, when I try to set up a link like they’ve worked in the past, ie: [http://gardeningingreenwood.wordpress.com/fronds/] it says I don’t have a web browser connected to my system, which is not true – I’ve had Safari forever. So I can’t really test to see if the ones I try to set up even work. I’m at a loss… But I can give you the titles of some of the posts and the addresses that are in the search bar for them:

    Paul Militaru: “Autumn Flowers” [photopaulm.com]
oneanna65: “THE LAUGHING HEART by C. Bukowski” [cancerkillingrecipe.me]
F.G.M.: “God loves Gardens / Dieu aime les Jardins” [wordsinthelight.com]

I hope this helps. If it doesn’t can you please teach me how to send you the links?

    Thank you for your help…
    Steve

  • Hi Steve –

You can copy + paste the links from the address bar in the Safari browser.

    – highlight the link
    – right click, select copy
    – come back here, right click paste

and here’s a new one I got last night. I can’t “like” it either.

    Hi –

    The latest:

I just updated my system to run macOS 10.14 Mojave. I went to the first site I listed and the box on the upper left corner of the screen that was blank and disappeared before stayed long enough for me to log in again. That then allowed me to like both that first site (photopaulm) and the second one (cancerkillingrecipe). But I still can’t like any of the others. Weird, huh??

    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Hi Steve –

That’s great information, thanks for sharing. There’s something with your set up that is being funky. I say that, because I’m able to like the remaining posts that you’ve not been able to do so with yet. It’s odd.

Are you signed in to your WordPress.com account with in the same browser when you are trying to like these posts?

Another idea is to just start over with a fresh installation of the browser to see if you have any better luck. Let me know if that works.

    Hi Liz –

Thanks for your reply and continued help!

I do use the same browser, Safari, for WordPress.com as for liking the posts. And since I didn’t know how to re-instal Safari I did some research. According to Apple the way to do this is to update your system to the latest OS version, which I just did by installing Mojave. That gave me latest version of Safari, so in effect I’ve just re-installed it. But it still doesn’t work. Now what?

OK, a whole new idea. My computer savvy partner just suggested I try this in Firefox. So I did and I was able to like all the posts!! I guess this means I have something weird even with my new OS/Safari. Sigh…. So maybe I’ll just switch to Firefox when this happens and like the posts, and then go back to Safari. I don’t want to totally switch to Firefox so maybe this is just my wonky work-around. At least I can like the posts this way…

This is a hassle, but it’s OK with me (I guess), unless you think this is nuts, or have any other ideas…

    Thanks again,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,

My computer savvy partner just suggested I try this in Firefox. So I did and I was able to like all the posts!! I guess this means I have something weird even with my new OS/Safari.

I’ve looked into this further and it appears Apple recently made a security change to Safari 12 (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) which is having an impact on certain features including the Like button. So if you are using the latest version of Safari and the button still isn’t working, this is likely to be the cause.

This change is something our developers are already aware of and looking in to but as this is related to a change on Apple’s end, we’ll need some time to look at the best way forward.

If the issue occurred before you started using Safari 12, it may have been related to browser extensions or ad blockers (if they were installed) — they can sometimes prevent certain features from working correctly.

    Hi Gemma,

Thanks so much for looking into this so thoroughly for me. I appreciate it a lot. I did have the same problem before I upgraded to the latest OS Mojave/Safari so it may have been my ad blocker as you suggest. I guess I’ll just have to keep switching to Firefox to like things that I can’t like in Safari for now. At least I can still do that! Ah well, so it goes. I suppose I’ll know it’s been fixed when I can like everything in Safari again…

Thanks again for all your support. You folks are great!

    The last straw…

I just tried to like posts in Firefox. They said I should upgrade to the newest version. Bad mistake!! Now I can’t like them in Firefox!! So I tried Chrome. It doesn’t work either!! Did All these browsers change their tracking at once?? This is nuts!! I feel bad because I can’t let people know I saw their like on my site and get back to tell them. I feel like a louse….

So I guess I still need help. Or I’ll just wait till I can do it again in Safari as I suggested in my last post. Unless you can suggest any other work-around…? Maybe I’ll try leaving a comment instead and see if that works. I’m so sorry for all the hassle…

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

I did have the same problem before I upgraded to the latest OS Mojave/Safari

Safari 12 came out a couple of weeks before Mojave’s general release, and this change shipped with that version of Safari.

I suppose I’ll know it’s been fixed when I can like everything in Safari again…

There is nothing to fix, as nothing is broken. This is an intentional change Apple made in Safari 12, and affects any service that relies on tracking your login across various domains, not just WordPress.com – if Safari detects a site tracking you in this way, it will automatically start blocking it.

We are investigating if there are any way of preventing this, but it seems unlikely, and it’s more likely that we’ll have to require re-login on all sites on custom domains in future before you can follow/like/comment.

If you open Safari preferences and go to the privacy tab, uncheck the “Prevent cross-site tracking” option, and things should work for you again in Safari.

I just tried to like posts in Firefox. They said I should upgrade to the newest version. Bad mistake!! Now I can’t like them in Firefox!! So I tried Chrome. It doesn’t work either!! Did All these browsers change their tracking at once??

Similar tracking blocking is being implemented in both Firefox and Chrome, and has existed in Opera for quite some time. In both Firefox and Chrome you can add exceptions for certain sites, though, and in Firefox, for example, you can specify that tracking protection should only be active in private browsing sessions, rather than always.

So for those two browsers, try playing around with the security and cookie settings and see if that makes any difference, and also try disabling any browser extensions you have installed to see if that helps.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thanks so much for this updated info. I guess I should have said “remedy” instead of “fix”, eh? It sounds like I may have already had the upgrade to Safari before I upgraded to Mojave so that may be why it didn’t work before the upgrade either… I did try re-logging in several times but it didn’t work this time, as it has in the past. I was able to comment on sites I couldn’t like so at least that worked to let people know I saw their like on my site.

I went to the privacy settings as you suggested and changed the setting on “prevent cross-site tracking” and it now allows me to like posts on sites I couldn’t like before. Yay!! I may turn this feature on and off as needed depending on whether I’m trying to like a site or not. It’s easy and it sounds like it’s a useful thing to leave on in general. I’ll check out Firefox and Chrome to change things there too, tho I rarely use either of them…

So I guess this issue is remedied for now, if not truly resolved… Hooray!!! I can’t thank you all enough for helping me. You have a great support team!!

    Thank you again!
    Steve
BTW, I recognize your photo as the person who helped me the last time I had this same problem a couple of years ago, but I can’t recall what we did to correct it then. This time I will… ;-)

    @Gemma @Kokkieh

The same problem exists in the latest version of MS Edge when you upgrade to Windows 10, Version 1809. You are able to like with wordpress.com sites, but not with those using custom domains. With MS Edge, you are unable to customize your browser settings like you were able with IE. If anything, it’ll force me to leave a comment instead of pressing a like button. :)

    Have a great weekend.

    David

  • @hiddenlens thanks for that. I’d bet there’s some setting like that, possibly under some advanced or Privacy or security setting? Or perhaps there’s a setting to let you whitelist sites for cookies? If not there’s little we can do with the browser blocking that, but leaving comments is always nice, too!

    Cheers :)

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia – I did a little more checking; it’s not hidden in some advanced, privacy, or security setting. Apparently, to have greater security for their Edge browser, MS decided to have so few controls available for a user to customize. I did discover the like button is still functional with IE 11. MS has kept IE 11 available and updated security wise since some sites have been built with IE specifically in mind.

Thanks for sharing that information @hiddenlens, much appreciated.
