Liking other blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

Why is it when I try to like other blogs, the little star lights up but then turns right back off?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

What is the URL of the site you are having difficulty liking content on? Also do you have this same issue if you use a different browser? I noticed you appear to be using Firefox and I’m wondering if you have this same issue if you use Chrome instead, for example.

    Thanks for the additional info!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for your response. I’ve tried Firefox, Chrome and Edge, all without success, although I would normally use Firefox. I am trying to like blogs that I have liked before so this is nothing new. I’ve tried doing what other threads have suggested: clearing the cache, making sure javascript is allowed, etc. I’ve tried installing and re-installing new browsers, knowing that they are being set up completely clean and clear of any unusual settings. I have tried doing this from my desktop at home as well as my desktop at work, all without success. I’m simply trying to press the “like” star on posts in my reader feed like I used to be able to do. When I left-click the star, the number of “likes” increases, the star changes color, and I see the list of other users, but then it immediately reverts, the number decreases, the star changes back to clear, as if I had never pressed anything. I’m at my wit’s end. Could this be a Windows setting instead of a browser setting? Is there something about my account in WordPress that is doing this?

  • Hi, when did this start happening? I tried to replicate it on my end, but I couldn’t. So it might be some sort of delay in your internet connection. Have you tried a different connection?

  • Unknown's avatar

It started months ago, although I don’t really know when because I don’t do this all that often. I doubt it’s the connection, because I’ve tried this both at home and at work and the internet connections in both places are very good.

  • Hi @trylondm, would it be okay if we did some testing using your account to see if we can duplicate the issue? Your issue sounds similar to one another user is dealing with: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/nothing-i-like-stays-liked/

I don’t mind at all. Please do. It is so frustrating.

Reading the other thread, I have one additional item to add. Under “My sites”, I would normally see 4 different sites. Recently I noticed I had 6 sites, which included 2 that I had started years ago (but never posted) and thought I had deleted years ago also. I don’t know why the 2 would suddenly reappear. I since deleted one of the two but wasn’t sure if I needed to keep the other, which is “trylondm”.

I’m mentioning this because the other user in the other thread said something about not having authority to a site you had referenced. Is it possible my account is still linked somehow to one of these deleted and/or inactive blogs?

  • Thank you for bringing it up! There was one other case that seemed tied to a mystery site situation like that too, and we were able to resolve that one.

    1. Please do go ahead and delete trylondm unless you may want to use the name for something else.

    2. Please also select a primary site:
    https://wordpress.com/me/account

Note that’s the site you’ll default to when logging into our admin area (so for stats, etc). It’s different from Web address, which is the default link for your comments.

Then update us here and we’ll test. Thanks!

Hi Supernovia and thanks for your help so far.

I decided I’d still like to hold onto site trylondm for now, but would gladly delete it if I knew that would fix the problem.

I also went to select a primary site, but it was already set on TheParkExplorer which is where I’d like to leave it for now. So in fact I’ve made no changes…

  • Hi there,

On our end we’ve logged you out of any active sessions, in the event that a previous session is somehow causing this issue.

Are you able to like content if you try again? Also please share the URL of the page or post you are trying to like, so we can include it in our investigation as we try to replicate this issue, thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for trying totoro. Sadly I still cannot like any posts.

Here’s one post I’ve been trying to like of late:
    https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/377155/posts/4351011186

Here’s another, written by my brother:
    https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/87873835/posts/4355118406

And a third, written by an employee and friend:
    https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/2606962/posts/4341215777

  • Thank you for the links! I can see you’re opening those posts in the Reader. Do you still have the same issue with likes if you open the post directly on the site? For example:

    https://nhgardensolutions.wordpress.com/2022/10/29/a-slight-return/.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it turns out I can like the post when not using the reader! That’s good news at least. Thanks. We’re making progress I hope.

  • Unknown's avatar

Although now that I go back and look at the post in the reader it does not show my like.

And now that I look at the post directly, my like is also gone. Only when I am actively displaying the post directly does it appear that I have liked it. As soon as I refresh the page, it is gone.

Back to square one I suppose.

  • @trylondm, in the other thread, we were able to resolve this by changing the email address & confirming the change. (We aren’t sure yet whether changing it back re-started the issue).

Would you be willing to try updating your email to see whether that makes any difference?

Also, note once you change your email address, you’ll want to update your picture as well.

Also, if you want to test like a post without bothering anyone, you can use the posts here:

    Just testing!

    This is interesting Supernovia.
I use a unique email address service called SneakEmail that generates the odd email addresses like the one on my account. I use this service to strictly control my identity and prevent spam. When I just used the service to generate a new address and tried to change my WordPress address to the new value, WordPress is telling me “The e-mail address entered is not allowed”.
That may be the source of all these problems, where the service maintaining my email address is being blacklisted behind the scenes somehow. Before I am forced to renounce this service and use another email address, is there any way you can investigate why the following email address should be “not allowed”?
Here’s the value I attempted to change to: (email visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hello there,

I use a unique email address service called SneakEmail that generates the odd email addresses like the one on my account. I use this service to strictly control my identity and prevent spam.

Also interesting… So is there an actual email inbox attached to this service?

The reason being is that, once changed there would need to be a verification email sent.

  • Unknown's avatar

The email service forwards all emails to me while identifying exactly where the email came from and which address was used.

So getting a verification email is never a problem.

  • Unknown's avatar

I should add that these unique email addresses are not throw-away addresses. They are just unique to the site. For instance, I’ve used the one associated with my WordPress account for as long as I have been using WordPress.
