limit character in homepage articles?
-
Hi there,
Is there a way I can limit the number of characters in the articles on my homepage so after x characters, it displays something like Read more….
Any thoughts on how to do this?
Thanks! -
In the form to create a post, there is a “more” button on the toolbar that does exactly what you want.

I think this depend on what theme you are using – apparently, some themes don’t have that option. :-S
In the visual editor, it’s a small button with ..erm… sort of simple lines describing a “break”. -
Thanks.. I have gone to edit one of my posts, but I cannot see any “more” button. where abouts on the page is it? Maybe I am being blind..

In the visual editor, it’s the button fourth from the right, just above the window where you write your post. It looks like a page split in two, with a dotted line through it.
You might have to place the cursor somewhere in the text first, so the thingy knows where to put the break.
If it’s definitely not there, you might want to test another theme. -
Could we have a link to your blog, toolman? I think the advice here might apply:

I think I understand what you want, but I don’t know how to accomplish it. Correct me if I’m wrong… Your main blog page shows X number of your last posts. Instead of having it show the entire contents of each post, you want shorter, preview paragraphs, where readers can click “more” and go to the full-length post. (?)
If this is what you want, I don’t see how it could be done in the post itself. Ask support to be sure, but I think it would have to be handled at theme-level or blog-level, not post-level.

I have a static front page and a hidden archive page, so I can’t test it for you. However, if the “more” button works as stated above, you would have to mark where you want each preview to end. I don’t think you can set a specified number of characters, unless there is a theme with that functionality built in.

toolman – if you have a wordpress.org blog, you’re in the wrong place, and we would have no idea about how to help.
flaneur – the possible solutions – providing s/he has a .com blog – are listed above. -
Assuming you are on .com, this is the actual code for the ‘read the rest of the post’. What the ‘more’ button puts in.
