  How do I limit the posts on the front page to only the latest post, and send everything else to the archive?

  Disabling” the infinite scroll feature to gain control over how many posts display on your front page will get rid of the pop-up in the footer but also results in a “Load More Posts” tab, and you can’t disable that “Load More Posts” tab from appearing and have “previous post” and “next post” links, without the Custom Design upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
