limitations for linen (and a suggestion)

I just purchased the linen theme, but want to get a refund. Basically, I wanted to use the top “showcase” for sticky blog entries. I then found I needed to place featured images on those blog posts to see an image there, but then I have no control over that – the featured image then appears, with no formatting control, in my blog post, whether I want it there (I don’t) or not.

So, as there is not a way to remove this image without buying and learning CSS (I don’t have the time or interest to do this, and don’t see why I should buy this additional feature anyway), I’d like to have a refund and will use another theme instead.

This also got my thinking, and I”d like to make a suggestion. I really like the ability (which I’m just learning) to present the blog posts as a summary by using the more-tag. What would be better though is if you had the additional option to create a summary of your post. The summary could be done as a template page on the theme – say a few lines of text and an image (in the left corner/side of the summary), and the summary could then be used also in the banner displays at the top if you made that post sticky.

This would also allow me to chose which photo to use in the summary, rather than having to use the more tag which can break the natural flow of the text and the presentation of a given image in a more natural sequence.

I can do this now I think, but then the post will have a still visible “summary section” at the top. A simple implementation could be like:

    <!–summary-begin–>
<img…> This is a post on blah, blah..
    <!–summary-end–>

Then, you remove this part of the post when you display the post itself (think of it as a rev on the “more” tag).

Hmm…Perhaps even simpler, you could just have an option to not display the content that appears before the “more” tag when displaying the post in full (could just be a theme option) – that could be quite a simple implementation and one that would add considerable polish to the presentation.

Do you have any themes with this capability?

    Thanks

    Hi Bill,

I’ve just refunded Linen for you — you should see the refund in your account within a few days.

However, you should be able to mark a photo as the “Featured Image” without it appearing in your post. To do this, click on Add Image and, in the dialog box that appears after uploading or selecting a photo, click on “Set as featured image.” You should then see the photo in your Featured Image module, but not in your editor.

Regarding your other suggestion, unfortunately we do not have a theme with that capacity yet. However, I’ve registered this feedback with our team so we can keep it in mind for future updates — thank you!

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask :)
