Limitations of business plan vs. self-hosted WordPress? Can I sell my own ads?

  • Unknown's avatar

Can users on the business plan sell their own ads, or are we limited to certain ad networks?

How about ecommerce? I saw an old post about users being limited to certain “ecommerce partners,” but I wonder if that is still the case.

Can business users install any plugin they want?

What are the current limitations of the business plan in comparison to a self-hosted site?

  • Hi raddevon,

    1) You can view a comparison of WordPress.COM and .ORG here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    2) Information on how to Monetize your site can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site/

Specifically, if you’d like to make money on your WordPress.com site with advertisements, WordAds is the official WordPress.com advertising program available for site owners (for Premium or Business plan subscribers): https://wordads.co/

You can also use Affiliate Links as long as the primary purpose of your blog is to create original content, and as long as the code for the ad is supported.

    3) Information on ecommerce can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/

    Specifically:

“In addition to the Store functionality, WordPress.com Business plan subscribers also have the ability to add third-party plugins and themes, which enables a wide variety of eCommerce solutions other than these – if you have complex eCommerce needs, the WordPress.com Business plan can work for you.”

You can browse the list of available plugins here: https://wordpress.com/plugins

    Hope this helps :)

  • Hi there,

On the WordPress.com Business Plan you are allowed to use other ad networks. You can also use any eCommerce system for WordPress as long as it’s not incompatible with Jetpack, which is enabled by default on all WordPress.com sites and cannot be removed.

Naturally we recommend WooCommerce, as that is also an Automattic product and it means we can provide you with in-depth support we might not be able to provide if you use a different system and our Business Plan sites are specifically optimised for use with WooCommerce, but you can use a different system as well if you prefer.

Thanks, kokkieh. You say you can use other ad networks, but is it permissible to sell ads directly and run them on your business site? In other words, can you sell ads on your site without using an ad network?

  • Good morning – Yes, you can run your own ads with the business plan.
