Limited appearance facilities in free wordpress blogs
-
Hey everyone! Right to the point, I’ve only limited options for appearance items like widgets or themes. Why? Why not other plug-ins or widgets supported for a free wordpress blog? If they are, then please tell me how to use them. All I need first is few plug-ins I need to use in my free wordpress blog and to change the theme to that which is not available in the list in my dashboard. And also widgets which aren’t in the list. Thank you. If I wasn’t clear anywhere above, please let me know i’ll explain more about my doubt. Thanks! :)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Themes that are used here have to be edited and modified so that they have no security issues and will work on this multi-user version of wordpress software. Therefore you cannot upload themes you find on the internet, they would not work here. http://support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/
Being a multi-user platform, we all share the same underlying files. If you were to add a plugin that had security issues to your blog (many do), that could possibly compromise everyone blogging here. Therefore, plugins are not allowed here. http://support.wordpress.com/plugins/
PHP script, javascript, flash, forms and iframes are not allowed here due to security concerns. Again, any bad code introduced on this multi-user platform could jeopardize everyone’s blog. http://support.wordpress.com/code/
This is one of the most reliable and secure blogging services around, and WordPress takes security very seriously.

Yes, I understand that. I started using wordpress blogs mainly for security purpose only. Thank you for the reply. And I’m sorry I should’ve seen other posts before posting this one as I found almost every answer for my questions in other posts. Thank you again.
One more thing, If I use integrated wordpress in my website, I’ll have the ability to use any custom theme or third party plug-ins etc. right? In that case, will I be assured of the safety that I get here on wordpress.COM? -
Yes, if you install wordpress on your third-party hosted site, you can do virtually anything your heart desires (within the limitations of your web host’s terms of service).
Plugins, widgets, javascript, flash, upload themes from the internet… you can go as crazy as you dare.
As far as security goes, wordpress software itself is very secure. The issues lie with the plugins and such that you add to it. I always stick with plugins that are listed on wordpress.ORG/extend/ , and I’m very careful about what widgets and such I install. I have to feel a high level of confidence in the authors before I’ll try their code.
-
In future, if I make a website with wordpress.ORG integrated in it and I use those widgets listed in wordpress.ORG/extend/ and later I get privacy problems like hacking or so by that widget(Ofcourse I may/may not know when/how my site is hacked, if in case) but, if it is known that the plug in I added into my site that is listed in /extend/ and still my site gets all files deleted or virus affected etc, will wordpress be responsible in bringing me back what I lost or compensating me with equal value?
If this isn’t the right place to ask about, its ok leave it. I’ll ask it in WP.ORG when I make one. :)As of now, I’ve this text widget, Can I use other flash embeddings using html script in that widget? In that case security can be in doubt huh?
-
flash embeddings, I mean, not only flash, any other like videos or site stats or etc…
I’m already using this Blog stats widget.. but some other sites offer attractive(yet insecure) widgets and code that includes them in the site….Basically what I need to know is, Can I embed a 3rd party widget into my blog using text widget by wordpress.com? :)
ps: I’m getting weird doubt that thats gonna be something like a crime! If I insert some widget that would destroy my site or something!? oops…
-
Oh yeah and one more thing.. Like the existing wordpress.COM themes available, can I make one theme that is publicly available too? I’m a web designer by profession too. Mainly I’m a graphic related person. ok ok not about me now. Is that possible? Do I need to buy something like credits to make that? or Do I need to be some wordpress staff to do that?
If in no way I cane make my own theme, Can I make a theme and give a sneak preview of it in these forums and some admin or staff of wordpress likes that and makes such available for everyone? Is this possible? :)Im sorry I maybe flooding you with a lot of doubts.. :) Thank you!
-
A last doubt… Can I have music being played in the background whenever any user opens my blog?
-
You can build themes for wordpress.ORG blogs. Here, you would have to submit it to staff and then they would have to decide if they wanted to include it, and if they did, it might be a few months before it appeared depending on staff loads and how long it took them to get it compliant with the system here.
You would have to submit it directly to staff via http://support.wordpress.com/contact/ .

the above questions and answers do not clarify why my newly created blog does not show the appearance menu. Can you pls advise and inform where I should look for it
-
-
Nope. Five bucks says he’s talking about a self-hosted blog and he doesn’t have that option because he’s not an admin.
-
Possible, but he/she says, “…my newly created blog…” which would lead me to believe it is his/her blog. Still though it could be self-hosted.
-
This is what I’m thinking. But I don’t HAVE five bucks, so it’s all just theoretical anyway.
