Limits of an NSFW Website
-
So, I wanna make a website because I’m tired of places like Twitter and whatnot. The issue? I’m an NSFW artist. I’ve been told by at least 3 different people and 5 different Reddit posts that WordPress is a great place to make a website and post NSFW content. It was cool and all, and I was ready to join, but then I read this on their Mature Content page:
However, there are limitations to the mature content permitted on our service. Please don’t:
- Post visual depictions of sexually explicit acts (such as, but not limited to, images, videos, and drawings) that can be considered sexually explicit;
- Post links or ads to adult-oriented affiliate networks, such as sexually explicit site signups;
- Post links, text, or images promoting or advertising escort or erotic services;
- Post images of extreme violence or gore. Exceptions may include posts which relate to world events, and which have associated context or commentary;
- Post images of child sexual abuse material;
- Post content that promotes pedophilia, such as sites with galleries of images of children where the images, content surrounding the images, or the intent of the blog is sexually suggestive.
It’s that first one. Does this mean I can’t draw people having sex? How far can I go with my content? Does anything beyond cheesecake or a pinup mean I get struck down? I want to use this place to build a website, but I also want to make sure I 100% know what I’m getting into.

We can’t really speculate in advance about what your art would look like but in general nudity (artistic) is allowed; as you mentioned, explicit acts are not. What you could do is self-report your site as mature (there’s a link in the mature content guide) so we can mark it as mature for you.
Depending on your requirements, you could also look at setting up a standalone site using the WordPress software (which originates from WordPress.org). You’d be looking at getting hosting services from a different company, and setting up your WordPress site through them. We do have some information comparing WordPress.com and WordPress.org here:
