Line height and page name in theme 'Editor'

  • Unknown's avatar

    Can anyone tell me the easiest way to change the line height/spacing in the free Editor theme? Nothing I do with the html seems to make any difference.

    I would also like to remove or hide the huge page name which is displayed at the top of the home page (same theme). Or perhaps this isn’t possible in a free theme?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

    Can anyone tell me the easiest way to change the line height/spacing in the free Editor theme? Nothing I do with the html seems to make any difference.

    The most straight forward and recommended way to change the line-height/spacing would be with some custom CSS. The ability to add custom CSS is included in the WordPress.com Premium and Business plans, and so you’d need to upgrade in order to use it.

    As a bit of a hacky way to change the line-height under our free plan is to use inline CSS and HTML in individual posts or pages. For example:

    <p style=" line-height: 2;">Post content.</p>

    I would also like to remove or hide the huge page name which is displayed at the top of the home page (same theme). Or perhaps this isn’t possible in a free theme?

    It’s possible to remove “Home” from the top of the site under our free plan. To do that:

    • Navigate to the page’s editor and then remove “Home” from the title field.”
    • Next, head to the Menus section of WordPress.com. Click the pencil icon next to the “Home” item to edit it and make sure you enter a navigation label into the field at the top so that the “Home” text still appears in your site’s menu.

    Let me know if those steps are clear or if you have any extra questions.

    Wow – that was quick, siobhyb – and exactly what I was looking for, Many thanks. With the title, it was the second step that was baffling me. I would never have thought of that.

    Regarding the line height, I would be quite happy using the ‘hacky’ way (I tried <p>, <div>, line-height etc) but the text still displays with the original spacing (at least in full screen/PC mode). Perhaps it’s an override somewhere. Anyway, I guess I can live with it for the moment, especially now I’ve reclaimed some screen real estate by removing the humungous page titles. :)

    Thanks again – most impressed.

    You’re most welcome! :)

    If you’d like me to take a look at a specific page where you’ve entered the inline CSS/HTML to change your line-height, I’d be happy to take into why it’s not working.

    hi Siobhyb. Thanks!

    The page is the home page https://englishmanaus.com/
    I particularly wanted the lists to be less spaced.

    I have another question you probably know the answer to, too – why does my link in the Google search engine still have the following words beneath the title?

    “Welcome to your new site! You can edit this page by clicking on the Edit link. For more information about customizing your site check out …”

    Is there some text somewhere that I’ve missed, or does it just take some time for this to change?

    Thanks again!

    Hi there,

    The page is the home page https://englishmanaus.com/
    I particularly wanted the lists to be less spaced.

    The inline styles on that page look correct to me. Could you please try reducing the line-height from 1.5 to see if that has any impact? I reduced it to 1 in my browser’s inspector tool and noticed that the space visibly reduced:

    <ul style="line-height: 1;">

    I have another question you probably know the answer to, too – why does my link in the Google search engine still have the following words beneath the title?

    I’m not able to see that text when Googling your site. Here’s a screenshot of the text I’m seeing:

    Screen Shot 2016 08 08 at 11 38 41

    Can you confirm that you’re still seeing the placeholder text after Googling? I’m not seeing it anywhere on your site, and the issue is therefore with Google hanging onto the old information.

    It can take some time for search engines, such as Google, to crawl and discover new information about a site. Submitting your site to Google’s Search Console (by following the steps here) can sometimes speed the process up. In general, the best advice I can provide is to continue to publish content and wait for Google to discover the new content/update its listings.

    Let me know if you have any extra questions or concerns the surrounding the above.

    Thanks!

    Thanks. Yes – tried that, but, although it looks fine in the visual editor, it always displays with a greater line height when it is ‘live’. Just for investigative purposes, I’ve reduced the height to 1 (which would look horrible, if it worked!) When I look at it in Firefox or Chrome, with the inspector, I see that the line-height attribute for the Body is set to 1.5. This appears to have been overridden by the inline style, but it still displays at 1.5 (or greater). I can’t see why at all. <thinks – could it be paragraph spacing? How/where on earth is that set?>

    Also, thanks for the feedback on the google description. It is now displaying fine – just a delay, as you suggest.

    The theme places some spacing between each list item in its CSS:

    .entry-content li {
        margin-bottom: 2%;
    }

    The line-height needs to be set a little lower than it will actually appear in order to override the above.

    Does that make sense? Let me know!
