linen – left sidebar thumbnails

I understand that by making an image a feature imgae it will display on the linen left sidebar. However, I loose the black box with the date of the post (I get a text date).
I am trying to make this new blog look like the linen theme samples – with the slider and lists of posts with a few lines intro line of text with a readmore (left sidebar with date in box and thumbnail)
Being new to wordpress.com I am lost on what I need to do to achieve this…

I’m sorry but we Volunteers have no knowledge of premium themes and how they are intended to work so we provide no support for them at all. The Linen theme is a Premium Theme and when you purchased it what came with that purchase was support directly from the theme designer. Go here > Appearance > Themes and click the link you find there to the Premium Themes Forum please.
