Lingering Questions About Changing to WordPress.org

  I’m moving my blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. I’ve successfully moved my posts and comments and have two remaining questions:

  1. Can I take my subscribers with me to my new blog?
  2. Can I set my .com URL to point to my new .org site? I know about the Site Redirect upgrade, but do I really have to pay for this since I’m staying in the WordPress family?

  The two sites are:
  Old: http://www.jonathanriggs.wordpress.com
  New: http://www.thatjonathanriggs.com (new WordPress.org)

  1. Staff can can move your email subscribers only. Followers using the WordPress.com Reader cannot be transferred because there is no WordPress.org Reader or in fact a community with shared in-house features like there is here at WordPress.com. WordPress.org installs are stand alone islands.

  What’s required is:
  installation and activation of the JetPack plugin;
  posting both URLs into this forum thread;
  tagging the thread with modlook in the sidebar;
  subscribing to the thread so you are notified when Staff make the transfer.

  2. Yes you really have to pay just like all of us do. http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

  WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and there is no “WordPress family”. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  Only those with WordPress.com blogs are part of a blogging “community” or “family” with shared in-house features like the Reader. Those who have WordPress.org installs are on stand alone islands and the vast majority of them use WordPress.org free software installs to make at least part of their income from. The two types of bloggers are different, though the advent of WordAds advertising has muddied the waters here to some degree.

  Thanks for jumping in. I just noticed you did. I was busy typing my lengthy response. I was tempted to get into why the software has become do sophisticated, complex and challenging to use and launch into a rant … lol :D

  Roger that. I see the “modlook” now in the right sidebar. So that just lets the moderator know to look at our discussion?

  It means that Staff who deal with threads in order of their original dates will make the email subscriber transfer when they get to this thread.
