lingering tags

I am using the Gazette theme which includes a set of blocks for Featured Content as pictured.
My issue is that the “featured” tag is still associated with older posts that were removed.
I have removed the tag from the posts, but they still show up in the Featured Content section, and in the Tags tab it still says those posts are featured. When I try to edit the posts, the tag is not present.
Even after adding the featured tag to new posts, the old ones still show up in the Featured Content section of the homepage.
I’ve tried clearing the cache on my desktop and I tried editing the posts from the Jetpack app on my phone. Neither option cleared up the issue.
Any suggestions?

I stumbled across the answer while trying to answer someone else forum post.
A setting was toggled that hides the “featured” tag on posts. I could not see the tag when I entered the editor.
Having turned off this setting I was able to remove the tag from the old posts and set new posts for the featured content area of the website.
The relevant setting was located in Site Editor>Customize>Featured Content
