Link category
-
I added a Link Category by mistake and now I can’t remove it. It displays in my sidebar in a place that confuses even me, let alone visitors.
I managed to remove it as a Category, but now it’s in the Default Link Category? That sounds like a Post Category defaultj, which I have as Uncategorized.
This is a category under links in the dashboard. Help!

1. To edit or delete a category assigned to a post (whether it’s a draft or has already been published), go to Dashboard → Posts → All Posts in your dashboard, hover over the title and click the Edit link. To delete the post click the Trash link.
For editing posts in the new editor see https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts
For bulk editing posts see https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit
2. To edit/delete categories in your dashboard go to Dashboard → Posts → Categories
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category
* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.
3. To edit or delete dynamic category pages in your custom menu go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php
* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.
4. To edit or delete Tags go to
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag* You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.
The combined total of categories and tags assigned to any post must not exceed 15 or it will not display on WordPress.COM Categories and Tags pages and in the WordPress.COM Reader. Never assign the same keyword as both a category and a tag as they are considered to be the same for search engine purposes. Hi timethief,
Thanks for replying so quickly! It looks like my question wasn’t very clear. I didn’t mean the Post Categories, I meant the Link Categories (https://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/link-categories/).
Eventually, I was able to fix this problem by changing the Link Name to something else, in this case “Links.” There is no option to delete or clear the category. Something needs to be in the field—good thing “Links” is appropriate.
So, since I don’t need Link Categories, I’m okay now. My Post Categories are not a problem. Again, thanks!

Aha! I apologize for not getting what you meant and I’m glad you resolved this issue. Best wishes.

@edrblogsites,
Eventually, I was able to fix this problem by changing the Link Name to something else, in this case “Links.” There is no option to delete or clear the category.
“Links” is not a “Link Name” in the Links Widget on https://marshallsquarepark.org/. It’s a link category. You may change the default link category at WP Admin Writing Settings > Default Link Category. If you only have the one link category, then it may be necessary to create a second link category in order to change the default.
You may also create additional link categories without changing the default link category, and assign your links to these categories, instead of or in addition to the default link category. See the Link Categories support page.
-
Once you’ve changed the default link category, you may edit or delete the category that was previously assigned as the default category.
