Link creation window is slow on blog with lots of posts
-
Hello! On my main blog, which has over 1,500 posts, when I create a link in the editor the link window takes 10 to 20 seconds to become responsive after opening. Here’s a screencast showing what I’m experiencing. While editing a post, I select some text and click the Link button. As soon as the link window opens I type some text in the URL box, but it takes several seconds for the text to appear.

I have one other active WordPress blog with far fewer posts, and the link window responds quickly on it. So I believe this performance issue to be a function of having to crunch through 1,500+ posts.
Could I ask that the performance of the link box be improved? As you can imagine, it’s become rather frustrating to insert links into my blog’s posts.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy!
Thanks for sharing. I’m happy to help figure this out, as I know it is becoming quite frustrating for you.
Is this issue happening in your browser or via the desktop app?
Could you share the details from loading http://supportdetails.com/ into your browser.
Have you already tried to clear your browser cache + cookies? Also, are you using any browser extensions or add ons? Sometimes those can run interference, so you could try to temporarily disable them as well.

staff-zinnia, thank you for responding! I use Chrome on multiple machines to edit my blog, using a common login. I am embarrassed to admit I didn’t try clearing cache/cookies before opening this thread. I tried it on one machine and it seems to have cleared up the problem on that machine only. Here are the details from supportdetails on that machine:
Operating System
Windows Windows 7
Screen Resolution
1920 x 1080
Web Browser
Chrome 54.0.2840.99
Browser Size
1235 x 609
IP Address
174.47.107.197
Color Depth
24 bit
Javascript
Enabled
Flash Version
23.0.-1
Cookies
EnabledI opened Firefox and IE to test this further. I never use those browsers so there’s no history or cache to speak of. The link box is plenty speedy.
So I’ll try clearing cache/cookies in Chrome on my other boxes and see if that resolves this everywhere. I’ll let you know if I continue to have issues.

Hi! I cleared cache and cookies on the machine where I do 80% of my blogging and got the same initial result. I set to work on my year-end best-of post with a ton of links in it. By the time I got to the end, the link window was slowing down. It’s not as bad as it was before, but there’s a lag of three or four seconds now. While I’d love it to be instantaneous all the time, this lag isn’t so bad I can’t deal. However, I still think it points to some performance challenges here that I’d be grateful if your engineers would look into. When I switch to the old editor and create links, the functionality there is extremely fast, so it sure seems like improvement is possible here! Thanks so much for your help!

Good Morning –
Thanks for the update! It definitely seems like you’re experiencing some type of glitch. I’m going to try and replicate the issue and talk with the right folks. I’ll post an update here once I have more news.
-
-
A few more questions – Are you running any browser extensions in Chrome? Does the issue persist from an incognito window in Chrome?
-
I entered incognito mode and created a test post. I created about a dozen links. After about the tenth link, I noticed that the link window was starting to slow down. Specifically, there was lag before I could type into the Search box.
-
I’m not able to replicate the delayed text with the link tool. This makes me wonder if there’s something in the post/page that is interfering with the link tool. Can you tell me which post you were recently editing when you noticed the delay?
-
Update: I found the post, Canon EOS A2e. When I add a link to that existing post there is not a delay. Are you using any browser extensions or add ons in Chrome that could be interfering?
-
Hi! I was using these two posts in my tests in this thread:
https://wordpress.com/post/blog.jimgrey.net/35525
https://wordpress.com/post/blog.jimgrey.net/35954
I tested the first with my browser extensions all enabled. The second was a post I created after going into Incognito Mode.
My extensions are Adblock Plus 1.12.4, feedly 35, and Photo Zoom for Facebook 1.1428.5.3.
-
Thanks. These extensions are up to date. I’ve tested under your site and I am still not able to replicate the issue. One last thing to try is to update from Chrome 54 to 55 and see if that makes any difference.
Let me know if that helps.
I’ll be happy to create an issue for our developers about this. But as this is the only report I can find with the link tool delays it is unlikely to be looked at right away so I’d recommend switching to a different browser in the meantime.
-
Hi @jimgrey, I thought I’d try duplicating this as well. No luck.
This stood out to me though:
By the time I got to the end, the link window was slowing down
It makes me think we’re not taking all of the same steps you’re taking. Is that after adding several links? Editing several posts? Having several tabs open? If you can send more details there we might be able to sort it out.

Hi all, and thank you for hanging in there with me on this!
To emphasize, clearing my cache and cookies dramatically improved the performance of the link box. At first, that performance was instantaneous. But with minmal linking, it began to slow down again. It has *not* slowed down to the same level as before clearing cache and cookies.
But when I’m in the editor and try to create a link, I am initially able to interact with the link box but only for a second, and then it locks up for a few seconds, and then I’m able to interact with it again. It looks from here that this is the time when it’s bringing up my entire list of posts in the search results area.
Since I last wrote in this thread, I forced Chrome to upgrade to v.55.
See this screencast, in which I show that I’ve upgraded, and then create a test post and begin creating links. You’ll see on each link that I appear to do nothing for a few seconds, and then bam, a bunch of text appears in the search box. I assure you, I don’t type that fast! I just typed while waiting for the lag to end, and the text I entered appeared all at once when the link box was ready for input again.

At this point, I have two workarounds:
1. Switch to IE, Edge, or Firefox, or try the desktop editor. I live my life in Chrome, but there are worse fates than using browsers I’m not crazy about.
2. Clear cache and cookies every time the lag gets bad. Not ideal as it restarts a litany of logging in again to every service I use, but it did significantly improve the lag.
-
ps. Just tried the desktop app, and I’m not experiencing lag there. I am going to try to change my workflow to use that app and see how it goes for a while.
-
I have not tested it extensively in other browsers, but I’m not able to easily recreate this condition there, and I am able to recreate it in Chrome every time.
-
@jimgrey For what it’s worth, with Chrome on my mac, I did the same test you did. The exception perhaps is that I searched for random words (whatever I could think of). Some of those searches came up empty and a few took a bit if the word was too general, but there was no delay in typing like you’re seeing.
