Link Gallery images to Pages and or Posts or external URL

    @lizthefair
Woo hoo! I’ll second those congrats!

As far as I can tell, the original intent of the Gallery images being uploaded and attached to a specific post/page would solve both issues (caption and link).

I’m not sure that was the intent of the developers who made galleries, but I’d just be making assumptions anyway. :)

Since all of this trickles down to us from ORG, how does the plugin that Mika mentioned in the trak ticket you opened do what it does?

I had to hunt for this…

Here’s the Trac ticket for reference:
    https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/28653

    Here’s the plugin Mika mentioned:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-gallery-custom-links/

I admit that I’ve never tried the plugin!

Dear chinmayikaushik-thanks for your support. As Staff have requested, please include how you would use this feature if available.

  • Unknown's avatar

I join in on the request.
If I had this feature (linkable gallery images) this would allow me to easily create a grid of various categories within a specific page I am currently building on my blog dailypscychedelicvideo.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I would use it to display a slideshow on my home page. Each picture would have a link to a specific page or post.

    Like a slideshow menu.

Same here, would like to join in on the request to add this feature! I would love to have the option to link from my gallery to a specific post or url.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I am thinking of moving my site for this reason alone. We need this!!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m seriously considering moving my site because I cannot, without a heap of time that I can’t spare right now, create a simple clean page of images that then link to the relevant content beneath them.

An example of what I’d like to achieve with my site…

    http://www.goinghometoroost.com/category/indie-biz/

click on any photo and it takes you to the relevant post.

Please WordPress, make this available – otherwise I’m off!

    craftylittlecoco-See what comes next…

mellowground-what you are looking at on that site is a dynamically created Category archive page that uses featured image thumbnails to link to the post.

You might want to look at grid-based themes instead and/or an HTML table (more here) and/or using a Page with the Display Posts shortcode using image thumbnails.

Again, everyone, if you post into this thread, please also mention what you would do with it if this feature was available.

Whoops! Here’s the “more here” link. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I am setting up a new gallery right now and if I had this option I would set the gallery thumbnail image to link to an individual page that would give more detail of each project shown.
    http://americanmadebrand.com/amb-community/

The gallery is useless as is – since you’ll just see a bigger version of the thumbnail – not more detail or the whole quilt, etc.

    PLEASE add this feature. Thanks

Here is a link to a page that shows my gallery menu. This site is brand new so there are only two articles. Nevertheless, the intent of this page is to fill it with images with links to a corresponding article.

If the “gallery” function was linkable, I could simply insert a gallery instead of coding images to float next to one another.

I totally agree. I need that functionality on my site too. Add me to the list.

@zoeypantz – You can add much more information to the Description field of the image when creating a Gallery. That way when people click on the thumbnail image on the page where the Gallery appears, they’ll see that additional information below the image on the image Attachment page you’ve linked to.

If you want to link to an entirely different image, like a picture of only the quilt itself, that is exactly what this thread (grin) is all about.

@michaeljshull-I haven’t been able to delve into the Portfolio feature very much (the Gallery keeps me busy). Reading through that Support doc, I imagine that this is a way that one could do what you are wanting to do, but without the need to do any special coding. Why not set up a test Portfolio and give it a whirl.

@ayarros-thanks for your support. How would you use this functionality if you had it?

    Hi justjennifer.

Thanks for your reply. The picture menu above is actually a project in a portfolio. The portfolio section is kind of like a page and each project within is sort of like a blog posting categorized by date and time with the most recent project at the top.

Other than that the content seems to be shaped exactly the same as a page or post. It is like both in one.

If you go to my portfolio section, you will see an example. I have added three projects here:

    <ol>
    <li><a href="http://postadventure.wordpress.com/portfolio/sample-gallery/">A gallery </a>(simple gallery)</li>
    <li><a href="http://postadventure.wordpress.com/portfolio/sample-gallery-menu/">Picture menu w/o links or editing</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://postadventure.wordpress.com/portfolio/gallery/">Original picture menu </a>(collection of pictures with links)</li>
    </ol>

As you can see in number 1, it is an average gallery. You can add links to the description (like I did with the little truck), however, this would entail opening the gallery and clicking on the hyperlink. On the plus side, the pictures are easy to select and look very nice in the gallery box.

Number 2 is an example of simply throwing pictures on a page. The little truck does have a link but none of the pictures are edited to position esthetically.

Number 3 is my original picture menu. It is at the bottom because I made it a few days back. It looks OK but is very labor intensive.
With a little coding I think we can mix the utility of item three and item one, but somehow that would entail adding a URL to the media section I would guess.

I hope this helps. The portfolio section works great for my business networking website (private). I display current business projects that are listed by date. Very nice feature. For this purpose above, however, I see no need for it. Perhaps there is something that I am missing. d:-)
    Cheers,
    Mike

Sorry about the code above. My bad.

  • Unknown's avatar

One more thing about the portfolio. This section does NOT show up on your site map nor does it automatically attach itself to your menu bar. Great feature for hiding content from those avenues but still want available for password access.

Again, I am a bit off topic here other than to point that It hasn’t been a successful model for the gallery menu for me. d;-)
