Link Gallery images to Pages and or Posts or external URL

I’d also like request the functionality of links in galleries. I recently purchased a WordPress Premium theme and I would use the gallery-link functionality to showcase clips from my writing portfolio. So each image would link to an external URL–interestingly enough most of those posts are on other larger WordPress-operated sites. But really, pretty please make this functionality happen for the community.

@designsimply – I’m a +1 for this feature too. I manage a farmers’ market website, and I’d like to have a page of images/logos for each stallholder that links to their respective websites (or facebook pages).

For bonus points, as the stalls vary from month-to-month, I would like to unpublish the photos for stalls not attending each month, allowing me to notify our Facebook followers the week before the market ‘Check out which stalls will be at this months’ market’.

I would love this, too. I run a website that does book reviews and articles, and a gallery would be great to showcase the covers of the books we’ve reviewed–with the images then linking straight to the review in question.

(Actually, what would be even more perfect for me is if the display-posts shortcode were extended so that it can display posts (and thus featured images) in a grid pattern, rather than just a list. That way I wouldn’t even have to manually update anything!)

You could do this with custom CSS if you have one of the WordPress.com plans. If that sounds interesting, post an example of a page with a display posts shortcode on it in the CSS forum to get some help with an example.

Right now I have some REALLY cumbersome posts on how to make different color-pattern variations of the same basic item… (The tutorial for the item itself is in a separate post, these are “addendum” posts teaching color-pattern variations.)

It would be fantastic if a reader could just click on a photo in a gallery and go straight to the instructions on how to set up that color-pattern instead of wading down through each photo + accompanying instruction, in order to find the setup instructions for the one particular color-pattern they want to make.

The post below is an example, it looks terrible! Really needs a gallery with clickable links to separate setup info so you don’t have to see all that dreary text (and a separate photo of each item, of course! – i was lazy here and just used the same group photo throughout)

@ingridcc – As far as I can see you aren’t using the Gallery feature in that Post, but you could. Have you tried adding each set of instructions directly to the relevant Description area of the Gallery image? You should definitely have a different photo for each technique/set of instructions.

Please add this feature. It’s one of the most requested functionalities within your product.

And I cannot imagine that it would take more than a week to implement. This conversation has been going on for over a year.

    Just implement the change!!!!!!

@justjennifer, thanks for looking though it’s a little embarrassing–as I said I was very lazy in that post, it’s not one of my better ones!!!
I threw that post out quick and messy in response to some requests for specific instructions after I had used that particular “group” photo as one of the illustrations in a non-tutorial post…

Hmm, I never thought of adding instructions into a description area for a gallery image, though. Maybe I’ll try it on my test blog. It seems like it might be an odd format for copying and printing out, though.

But I would really prefer to have photos link to a page or a post, especially if more info than just color sequences were involved–most of my tutorials include one or more videos, for example.

@selwakil- I’m sure you didn’t have time to read through the entire thread, but implementing the change involves a significant change to the way the software works, so it’s not done lightly. But thanks for your support. :)

@ingridcc-You are right. For printing out, the post is better, even Attachment pages, which display the Description field, are better. The Photo Carousel, which is the default for the Gallery display unless you change it in Media Settings, would be my last choice where printing is concerned (and I am sorry for my very late reply).

    @designsimply

Couldn’t the gallery shortcode simply be modified to accept an additional list type attribute, let’s call it urls, so shortcode might look like…

    [gallery ids="314,325,369" urls="'http://www.somewhere.com', '', 'http://www.somewhereelse.org'"]

Which would mean… make the enlarged view of
    Image 314 link to http://www.somewhere.com
Image 325 not link to anything
    Image 369 link to http://www.somewhereelse.org

This would degrade nicely, old galleries would not have the urls attribute so behaviour would not change.

Also the links used would be gallery specific.

A mod to the admin side of the gallery interface would also be required, but I don’t think it is major.

    How about that? :-)

    Best
    Steve.

Steve, it’s not that simple. :) But thanks for the suggestion!

This thread is a great place to post reasons why you might need the change. I’m hoping to be able to refer back to this list if the project comes up in the WordPress core project, so the more good and specific examples from people about why they want a change like this, the better.

Short and sweet answer: the gallery feature is practically useless without this capability. I write a DIY blog and want to use the gallery to easily and cleanly format my “projects” page. But, unless I can link directly from the gallery to each individual project post, the feature becomes redundant.

I think that the WP Gallery Custom Links plugin does what you are looking for. You can link any image in a gallery to any page or post. I am using it to setup a gallery of community and neighborhood photos that link to page about each community or neighborhood. You can see the example on this page.

  • @kevanpewitt
It is not possible to use plugins in WordPress.com, thus this long thread requesting that the feature gets added here.

  • Unknown's avatar

@flourishandknot- you may want to look at using the Portfolio feature on your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/

  • Unknown's avatar

Just to follow up on a couple of things that others have said recently, I have tried using Portfolios on 2 of my sites at different times but took them off because they tended to have problems, like suddenly showing page not found for no particular reason. This must be a common problem since the support page lists what to do should this occur.

While I know WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different entities, WordPress.org’s Custom Gallery Links Plugin shows that it is possible. So, I do hope that the folks at WordPress.com can add this important feature in the not-to-distant future. Until then, I’ll continue to do my own work around…..

I’m with everyone else. Our nonprofit could use it to post a gallery of covers of articles, which link back to the original article. The articles are pdfs uploaded to our media library.

  • Unknown's avatar

Add my vote for this feature request on wp.com sites. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I have tried my hand at a tutorial with a step by step to create a gallery with custom links that justjennifer mentions here. Please feel free to check it out.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well done, JustJennifer. Thanks for letting us know, Kratmishra. This is is a nice workaround but let’s hope WordPress.com is able to come up with a more straightforwad way of doing this in the not too distant future. D
