Link not appearing when I go to publish

  • Unknown's avatar

Something odd seems to be happening with my site. The URL for the post, which always followed the title of the post, no longer is appearing. Thus, when I publish, no link appears. I have tried inserting the link manually, but then Facebook treats it as a photo, not a publication from WordPress. Has something changed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Have you tried running the URL through the facebook debugger:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

    Sometimes that helps.

Do you mean the URL for my blog? But this appears on the WordPress site itself, not just on Facebook.

  • Unknown's avatar

I ran it, but I have no idea what it did or what any of it means!

  • Unknown's avatar

    That didn’t work.

Here’s what I see. On the Classic new post page, where the box on the right allows you to edit and add hashtags to a post you plan to publicize, I used to see the title of the post and the URL for that post. Now ONLY the title appears—no URL. Can someone please help!? Thanks!

  • So, just so I’m clear, you no longer see what is in the red box on this screenshot of the classic interface:

Or, are you saying that you can no longer do this in the new interface?

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, I no longer see the URL for the post in the Edit Box for Custom Message under the Publicize option in the upper right of the page where the draft appears (in the Classic version). I’d post a screenshot if I could. It used to automatically include the URL. It no longer does.

  • Here are some screenshot instructions if you are not familiar with the process:

    Take a Screenshot

I find http://snag.gy/ to be very useful for sharing screenshots. You can also upload the screenshot to your site’s media library. I will be able to see it there.

I have a screenshot, just no way to include it here. I will add it to my gallery as you suggested. Please help!

OK, it’s the newest item in my media library—-you will see the box I am talking about with the title of one of my draft posts. Ordinarily a URL linking to the post would follow. It is not there and has not been there for my last several posts.

    Thanks!

    Hi Amy,

Thanks for clarification. We recently change the way the publicize feature works. Instead of appending the shortlink to all posts we now append the full link automatically to your Tweets.

Facebook will still link back to your original content even if you don’t include a link in the custom message field. If you include a link you may get a different result for example seeing your post as a photo instead of a publication.

This new feature frees up more space for your custom message.

Ah, ok, thanks! Perhaps next time it would be best to notify your users about such changes. I just stopped doing automatic publicizing once I thought the link was gone.

    Thanks again!

You’re welcome. If you need anything else just let us know.

OK, today I posted my first blog post since you explained the change to me. My post is still coming up as a photo and does not link directly to the post. I am going to have to do it manually—that is, instead of using the publicize feature, I will just post the link to Facebook as a status post. That way more people will realize it isn’t just a photograph.

    Bad change, WordPress.

    Hi Amy,

If you could link to a post that appears as a photo that would be amazing as it will help provide us with some context of what you’re seeing.

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure, here is a link to the one I posted yesterday:

    https://brotmanblog.wordpress.com/2015/06/16/three-days-in-budapest/

It appeared on FB, but unlike in the past where there would be a box with the post title and a photo, now just a photo appears. It’s a public post on FB so if you search for it there, you can see what I mean. Or I can take a screen shot.

    Thank you.

I have added two items to my gallery. One shows yesterday’s post as it appeared on FB; the other shows an older link as it appeared before you made this unannounced change.

Much harder for someone to figure out how to link to the actual post instead of just clicking on the photo and never seeing the post.

    Hi Amy,

Do you have a link to your Facebook page where I can see what the post looks like once it’s been added to Facebook?

I have ran the post through the Facebook debug tool and here is a screenshot of what Facebook previews the post as:

If this is not what you’re seeing please provide a Facebook page/profile URL for us to take a look at.

I posted two screenshots to my gallery—you can see the difference there. Here’s the link to my FB page. The latest one is on top, then a bunch where I did it manually. You have to back to before May 19 to see the way they used to post. Or you can look in my gallery.

And no, mine does not look like it did in the link you sent. It looks like a photo with a URL, no excerpt from my post, no large text showing the title with a link to the post. See my gallery if the FB link doesn’t work.

    Thanks.
