link -open in new page

    Hi,

I have the bog standard free wordpress blog.

Is it possible to get links to external pages to open in a new page?

In other posts people are saying that this is an option when you post, but I don’t see this option.

Perhaps it is only available if I upgrade?

Yes, it’s there as an option on free blogs. No you do not require an upgrade.

When you add in a new link, there’s a tab along the right hand side labeled “target”. Open it up and click the “_blank” box in there. That will open the link in a new window.

thanks timethief, but durrr, I still can’t see this target tab. can you be more specific about where it is, what colour, what it’s next to etc?

I’m on the posting page and the only buttons I have are in a row above the posting box. They say:

b i link b-quote del ins img ul ol li code more lookup close tags

when i click the link button a pop up appears which says ‘enter the url’ and the only buttons are ok and cancel.

underneath the posting box i have the box for uploading images which says upload, browse all, videos, slideshows. It has choose file and upload buttons.

down the right hand side I have categories, discussion, post password, post slug, post status, post timestamp

across the bottom i have optional excerpts and trackback.

are you sure i have this option? i don’t have webspace or anything i just have the free wordpress blog.

the method timethief refers to is available in blogroll. to put it in your posts, this is the code:

    < a href=”url” target=”_blank” >title< /a > (close the spaces between < and >)

take note that this method can be considered inappropriate by some readers as it forces a new window to open without the reader’s permission.

I am one of those who objects to anyone controlling my browser.

It’s an accessability issue as well for those who have to use text browsers.

    Hi again everyone,

Can I start by just pointing out (in a nice way!) that my blog is less of a blog and more of a portfolio/holding page. Where I am trying to open new pages it is because I am linking to my own work on another site. In a way I am just linking to and from myself. I wouldn’t ever be so rude as to open new pages if it was just a regular link to somewhere random.

I understand that people object to having their browsers controlled, but my blog isn’t intended for mass consumption. I’m only ever going to give out my blog address in a CV capacity when I want people to look at my work all in one place. (Although of course I don’t mind if people happen upon it themselves.)

I have bought my own webspace, but found that I haven’t had time to create a site, and as every month goes by I am forgetting dreamweaver ever more. Hence I turn to the lovely easy wordpress, or so I thought! Now I’m having to html it after all!

So I tried using the html target=”_blank” code you provided but I still can’t get it to work.

    Here is my code:

    <a href="http://observer.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,2104530,00.html"><img src='http://katietoms.wordpress.com/files/2007/06/laurasolon1.jpg' alt='laurasolon1.jpg'></a>

Whereabouts in this should I put it?

Also, I am using the image as the link. Will the target=_blank code still work in this instance?

Does it need to be modified? (ie perhaps I should get rid of the >title< bit?

Is it possible to have both an image link and open a new page – or does it have to be one or the other?

Here is a link to my blog so you can see what I’m on about:

    Thanks all

If you insert your images using the wordpress upload box and hit “link to file” that makes every image clickable to its own full-size page. If you click on the image in Edit and edit the link to open in a new window, you’ll achieve much the same thing.

Just for reference, your blog link is incorrect. Pleae don’t use the ‘www’ bit as the ‘katietoms’ bit takes the place of it. To use both, the link would be broken for about 30% of the net as well as all major search engine spiders.

As to your question, not sure what you’r trying to do. Are you linking somehow to a popup for this imahe or what? Can you explain a bit more?

I think this is what you’re trying to do:

    <a href="http://observer.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,,2104530,00.html" target="_blank"><img src='http://katietoms.wordpress.com/files/2007/06/laurasolon1.jpg' alt='laurasolon1.jpg' /></a>

Thanks for the code drmike. That worked exactly as I wished it to. Funny, because it looked exactly the same as what I had been fiddling around with for the past half an hour. A space here a > there eh?!
Thanks again. Now comes the bit where I have to go back and modify every post…snooooze.
