"Link" Pages

  • Unknown's avatar

Blogger recently came out with a feature (that was already available on other blogging sites such as Weebly) that I really wish WordPress would hurry up and develop. The feature is that authors can create a new page, but instead of having content on the page, just have the page link link to a different website. I think this feature would really come in handy if you have pages like Facebook and Twitter and aren’t using a theme that is able to promote them in a user-friendly manner; or, if you’re creating a team website (like one I created on Weebly, which was how I was first introduced to this feature). I was working on a softball website and wanted to be able to add links to the school’s website as well as the MHSAA website but have it in the same row with my other pages.

I honestly think this is the only thing that WordPress is really lacking, and I would love to see a feature like this developed in the (very) near future…

You probably need to check this:

    Menus

  • Unknown's avatar

There are a few themes here with “links” page. Although each author cannot have a separate one, you can let each author have a links category of their own.

    Archives and Links page templates

The reason that this is not on all themes is that the bulk of the themes here have been designed by individual designers who made their own decisions on what they would include in the themes and what they would not, and wordpress sticks very closely to the theme designer’s intent. Typically the only modifications they make is so they fit within the restrictions here and so that they support the unique features here.

Thanks panaghiotisadam, that really helped. I wasn’t aware that the “menu” allowed you to do that. I am now completely content with my site :)

    You’re welcome Jessica.
By the way, you could do also do it before the arrival of custom menus – see here:

    Page tabs as extra links

You can also create links. As you create them use categories to group them as you wish to show them. Then use the Link Widget to include your links in the sidebar (Appearance –> Widgets)

    Have fun blogging!

@lifenbits: Jessica wanted to add links “in the same row with [her] other pages“. It would be good if you stopped posting irrelevant replies.

@panaghiotisadam My comments here are well intentioned. I believe I am free to post them as you are free to judge them “irrelevant” (very rude as well). I’m no expert on blogging (and I don’t claim to be one), but I’m willing to learn from people who knows a lot, like you and others that regularly post here. It wouldn’t hurt for you guys to take it easy with others, and be civilized. It doesn’t look good when you slam on people like that.

I want to share the little knowledge I have, and I will continue to share what I feel relevant, sorry, your approval is not required.

I was just visiting your site and is full of very exciting information and blogging tips. It is a shame that you have damaged the strong good impression you site caused on me.

Please let people share and express themselves. If you don’t agree or believe the information is wrong, by all means say something, but it doesn’t cost you anything to be polite and respectful to other when you do it.

@missjessica184 I apologize that you had to read this on your thread but one thing I don’t agree with is censorship and rudeness.

However well-intentioned your comments may be (and that claim is undermined by your hostility) it’s best to only give responses that answer the question as asked. It’s a technical forum, not an Oprah sharing site.

@raincoaster Sir, I do respect you as well. You are certainly one of the experts sharing with others. Again, if WordPress.com want a small group of people to be the only to answers questions, they can certainly set it up that way. Until then, I plan to share here.

Your response here, in my opinion, is a polite and respectful one, except for the phrase within the parenthesis. A polite comment is all I ask for.

But you didn’t answer the question. If you can’t answer the question, don’t type into the thread. And when you get it wrong and are corrected, don’t take it personally.

God knows I learned that very early.

We don’t have any special status as volunteers. We all just have the reputations we’ve earned. Earn yours by supplying only accurate answers to questions that have been asked.

@raincoaster I just visited you site and I believe I should’ve say Mam instead of Sir. I thank you for the tone of your response.

Please be reassured that when I reply, I thought I was answering Jessica’s question. It sometimes happens that people misunderstand the questions. I have seen it in other threads that even the experts misunderstand the question from time to time, and just polite comments fly around.

You have my commitment to answer questions as accurate as I can and relevant as possible. After all, you’re complete correct, good reputations need to be earned.

Great. I thank you for taking it in good spirit. We’ve all made mistakes. When I first started I was correcting Dr Mike and had NO IDEA how wrong I was.

We can all have bad days and get snappish. These are not a nurturing group of forums. That said, they’re not generally vicious (I haven’t said, “Look Princess, you’re full of shit” to anyone in some time, although I HAVE done it here). They’re just all about the technical answers.
