Link Portfolio pages to blog entries Illustratr theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Using the Illustratr theme, I have built a website with blog entries but I would like to display my portfolio on my homepage. I would like the portfolio images to link to blog entries, so I add links to the images. However, they keep linking to the Portfolio page instead of the blog page specified in the link. Is there a way to correct this? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jessica,

You may use either the Portfolio Page Template or Portfolio Shortcode in a static front page to display your portfolio on the front page with the Illustratr theme applied. See the corresponding sections of the Illustratr theme guide for instructions and helpful links.

The items in a WordPress.com portfolio are always projects. So the titles and featured images in a portfolio grid are designed to link to the corresponding projects. How are you attempting to link them to blog entries? In other words, where would you put the “specified” link that you refer to? Your portfolio page is here: https://jezzen.me/portfolio/. It’s not possible to add a link to a featured image, regardless of where the featured image is set or displayed, so it’s not clear where you are adding the link you refer to.

A hack that may allow you to partially accomplish what you are attempting to do is described by staff member @kokkieh in the topic Link portfolio project to blog posts.

Hi musicdoc1, thanks for your quick reply. I guess what I wanted was to have my blog posts behave like a portfolio – a collection of featured images instead of a blog roll. What I did was to add portfolio pages with the same image that was in my blog posts and added a link to the image on the portfolio page. It did not link to the blog post however, but to the portfolio page – the same problem they talked about in the link you provided, and workarounds did not help me, either. So I chose a n00b-proof theme instead, which is fine for now :)

What do you mean by add portfolio pages? An image in the content of a portfolio project (or a post, static page, etc.) can be linked to any valid URL on, or external to, the site. See the Image Links support page. This doesn’t apply to featured images, so it doesn’t apply to the grid of featured images in the portfolio.

On my dashboard, I add a page to my portfolio. I add an image to the content of the page, select it and add a link to my blog post url. When I click it, I get redirected to the portfolio page instead of my blog post. So linking to a post from within a portfolio page just isn’t working for me. Maybe I’ll try my hand at converting my posts to pages and see what that does. :)

That means that the links are not being made properly. Let me know if you’d like some help with that. : -)

Here’s a link to your post Shamanka.
The HTML code of the link is
    <a href="https://jezzen.me/2017/06/10/shamanka/">Shamanka</a>
which is a specific example of the general form
    <a href="link URL">link text</a>

Image links are made similarly. See the Image Links support page for information and instructions.

Hm when I add a link via the pop up menu it says http instead of https. I don’t know if that is the problem. Can’t really test it right now either because my portfolio page stopped displaying my added pages. So I trashed the portfolio page, emptied the trash and made a new page. For some reason, it keeps referring to the portfolio page as portfolio-2 and I can’t change it. I’m beginning to think creating a wordpress site on an ipad is less than ideal :) Anyway, it’s too much hassle for me. We have a saying in Dutch which in this case loosely translates as “if you can’t do it the way you need to, you need to do it the way you can.” But thanks for your help :)

    You’re welcome. : -)
If you have further questions regarding creating and using image links, or other concerns related to this topic, then you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar at right (of this thread) to call for staff attention. Good luck!

Yes, that might be a problem.
