Link portfolio project to blog posts
-
How can I link projects on the portfolio page (front page in my case) to individual blog posts? Right now, I’ve got two pages (portfolio project page and individual blog post) for the same content.
I’m using the “Illustratr” theme and the “Free” plan.
The blog that I need help with is https://preskaspoems.wordpress.com/The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The set-up instructions for your theme are here https://wordpress.com/themes/illustratr/

Thanks for your quick reply timethief.
I’ve already gone through those links and couldn’t find a relevant answer to my query.
Maybe I’m not explaining this right.
I’ve created a page called “Poems” using the “Portfolio Page template” and then set that as the “Static Front Page”. I’ve set up another page called “Blog” as the “Posts page”.
The front page has various links to the different portfolio projects while the “Blog” page has got links to various individual blog posts. Due to this, I’ve got duplicates for all my posts.
What I’m hoping to do is to link the individual blog posts to the front page so when a person clicks on a project on the front page, it sends them to that blog post.I hope this makes sense.
I changed my front page to the portfolio page just today and have been trying to find a solution to this problem for hours now.
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
You are trying to get posts to behave like portfolio projects, and the software is not designed to do that. It’s the same as expecting an apple to taste like an orange.
The Portfolio page of your theme was designed to show portfolio projects, not posts.
There is a hack that might work for you, but it’s likely to completely mess up the SEO of your site, so keep that in mind before you try it.
What you can do is to first create a post and publish it. View the post in your browser and copy the link to the post.
Next, create a new portfolio project. Give it a featured image that can show on the front page. Leave it blank otherwise.
For the project title, use an HTML link to your post, as follows:
<a href="https://POST_URL">Post Title</a>Publish the project.
The project should appear on your front page with the featured image, but if you click it it should load your post instead.
Again, this is a hack, so I can’t guarantee that it will work, but I have used it on other themes in similar situations.

Hey,
Thanks for the idea! I realise how this request to link the portfolio projects to blog posts might seem unreasonable but I couldn’t find any other way of displaying the posts in such an attractive manner. I tried the “display posts” shortcode but the posts were displayed one below the other and did not look so good. The hack you suggested does work, in the sense that when you click on the title, it takes you to the blog post. But if you click on the featured image, it takes you to that blank project! Is there any way to get over this issue?
Also, what do you mean when you say that this will mess up the SEO of my sight? What would the implications of that be?

That’s why I’m saying this is a hack. It doesn’t work perfectly :)
My only other suggestion is to add a link to the post in the content of the project as well, so people can click on that to be taken to the post.
Where this can effect your SEO is that search engines will index both the project and the post, with the same title. So you could be penalised for duplicate content, or search engines could simply display the wrong link, meaning people searching for key words related to your site might not find the actual content via search engines.
Have you considered finding a theme that displays posts with big images on the front page, rather than one that uses portfolios?
