Link Post Format

    Hello!
I’m thinking of re-posting some of my old content and was wondering what the best way to do that would be.
I read this thread -> https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-do-i-repost-an-old-blog-entry?replies=7 and the answer given by kokkieh was reaaly enlightening. I think option no. 3 would work well for me.

Here’s where my issue comes into play. My theme is Baskerville 2, and it supports the Link post format. However, contrary to what kokkieh said, when I use Press This and the Link format, no matter if I click on the new post in the Reader, or on my page, I do NOT get taken to the original post.

So my question is: “How would I link an old post and have people directed to the old post automatically once they click on the new post?”

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

A few things have changed since I wrote that forum reply (for one, I wasn’t working for WordPress.com back then yet :) )

For example, the Reader no longer opens posts directly on your site, but in a full post view in the Reader itself, so now this would only work if you click the icon to view the post directly on your site.

On your site itself it should work that way, however, though I should note some themes don’t display a post title for the Link format on the main posts list, instead just displaying the link itself.

But I don’t see any posts using the Link post format if I look through the posts list on your site. Can you please give me a link to one of these posts so I can take a look?

Thanks so much for your helpful reply.

That totally makes sense what you said about the Reader.

You cannot find such post on my blog, because I’ve deleted the multiple attempts from the other day. Somehow, then, they did not work on my site, either. Today I tried and it worked, so maybe I forgot to hit “Save” or something last time…

Since I have your attention, maybe you can present a better idea to me regarding the re-blogging kind of thing. There’s this blog I follow, and he reposts his content all the time. The original date is shown on top, all the Likes and comments from when he originally posted it are there as well. How is this done? The only explanation known to me is that he has an upgraded account and he uses a special plugin for that. I’d appreciate it if you could confirm/ deny.

Excellent! Thanks for letting me know :)

What do you mean repost? Are you saying that same post was on his site previously? According to our records that post was first published on 1 April, and it’s the only copy of that post I can find on their site, and all comments on that post was made after the publication date on the post – I doubt he’d edit the time stamps on all the comments to just make it seem that way.

But there is no upgrade that will allow you to repost content. The only ways to bring old content on your site back to the top of the stream is to make a new post linking to the old one, be it manually, using Press This, or reblogging (recommended methods), to publish a new post duplicating the content of the old one (not recommended as it will lead to duplicate content issues with search engines), or to change the publication date on the old post and essentially just republish it (not recommended as it won’t cause the post to appear in the Reader again, and it will break the original permalink on the post).

Yes, the post was initially published April 1st and that’s when I first saw it. However, it appeared in my Reader again yesterday (April 8th) with “44 minutes ago”. This is not the first time, which leads me to believe that there is something I don’t know. I would have contacted the author of the blog directly, but I didn’t want to post off-topic things in his comment section.

Hmm. It appears that site might be republishing posts by changing the date, but as far as I know we should be blocking that, so I’ll follow up with the Reader team on that.

As I said above, though, we don’t recommend that, as it breaks the permalinks for posts, and it can also have a negative impact on SEO.

Yikes, I didn’t mean to get anyone in trouble.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • Not to worry, you didn’t get anyone in trouble. At worst we’ll be tweaking how things work and they won’t get away with it any more :)
