Link to an image on another site without importing to media library

I think warnings and error messages would create more problems for many more people, honestly. Especially your site readers. Before we did this kind of thing, folks would stop visiting sites that had SSL warnings on them (which you get from hotlinking an http image on an https page.) Or, users would simply see broken images while the site owner (who had the image cached in their browser) thought everything was fine.
But thank you for your feedback. I’ll note it.

I’m NOT suggesting you give error messages to the people viewing the blog. I AM suggesting you error messages to the people creating the blogs.
I get the HTML just the way I want it (subject to the CSS) and then I hit “Publish.”
You edit that HTML – after I hit “Publish” and give NO WARNING. I think that is unacceptable – speaking as the author of a blog. And I really doubt that the requirements doc (assuming there is one) calls it out that way.
But whatever – I never expect WP to change anything.

It is NOT a broken image on my site. Please read the post entries above.
Here is what is happening.
1. I create a post and link to an image I had used previously on an old blog.
2. I get the post EXACTLY how I want it, including looking at it via “Preview”
3. I hit “Publish” (expecting that the HTML I coded would be published.)
4. WP behind the scenes decides – for WHATEVER reason – to edit the HTML, import the image into my “library” (it isn’t much of a library if it doesn’t even include sub-folders. More like a heap)
5. After both of the those actions are taken, WP publishes the new HTML without bothering to inform the author.I would love to see the requirements document that spelled that out in detail. Especially the requirement to keep the author of the post in the dark about whatever changes were made.
