link to download from external server

    Hi folks,

I have a file in my dropbox account ( http://www.dropbox.com) which I’m trying to make a link to so people can download the file by clicking the link in my blog. When you click on it, it’s supposed to activate a little pop-up download box which you then choose save or open. It works fine when I’m viewing the page WHEN I’M SIGNED IN but when I visit my blog when I’m not signed in, I get error 404 messages. http://www.timeth.wordpress.com/pclinuxoswallpapers The link is in the main body of text and you need to click on “here” to try it.
Hope someone can help me out.

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Tim,

Just FYI, you don’t need to write your URL like this:

“timeth” replaces the “www” in this case, so this is how your URL should read:

    “timeth.wordpress.com”

Now, try forcing the browser to read “%23” at the beginning of the file name. You can do it writing your URL like this:

    <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1993871/timethwordpress/wallpapers/%232PCLinuxOSmm.xcf">here</a>

In my tests, this worked. Give it a try.

    Thanks for the reply devblog,

I think my URL is already written with the %23 at the beginning of the file name. I tried it again and it works when I’m viewing the page and I’m signed in, but when I sign out and try clicking it to download, it goes to the dropbox website and gives 404 error, no pop-up download box. I’ve tried it on other browsers, same result. I’ll try it on another computer and see if it works. Any other suggestions?

I’m sorry, the URL didn’t come out right. The forums software converted my ASCII for the “%” sign. Let me try again

    here

Hopefully when I submit this, it should look like this (with no spaces):

    & # 37;232PCLinuxOSmm.xcf

dang it, used the wrong quotes. One more time:

    <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1993871/timethwordpress/wallpapers/&#37;232PCLinuxOSmm.xcf">here</a>

When I clicked the link on your blog the download started right up.there was no pop up window I viewed your blog with the DEV Version of Google Chrome.

    T3ck,

Logout and you will see the 404 page. The only browser this doesn’t happen in is Fx.

Thanks devblog and slikbonez, I’m getting lots of help ^_^

I tried your code devblog, but when I copy it in and update the post, a ‘0’ gets added here > ………..wallpapers/& # 0 3 7;232……………… (without spaces of course) and I get the same 404 error. Also, I tried signing out and clicking on the link you created 4 posts above this one, but still the same 404 error. Is there anything else I can try?

That is so weird… I made some more tests and it just won’t work… I would recommend you taking the “#” out of the file name; I think it’s the best solution for now.
