link to pages
-
I have added several links to my site (for items within my site) with no problem in the past. I currently tried to add two more links from the same page where I have added several other links successfully in the past. For some reason, after I highlight the word(s) to link in Edit mode, then click the “chain” icon, when I add words into the “Search” box that comes up to have WordPress find the URL ONLY list of Posts comes up. I need the list of Pages to come up as well as the links I am referring to are on Pages. This worked for me many times in the past. I tried this procedure tens of times last night and no pages came up. I used key words for the searches that are on pages I am trying to link to.
I also tried going to the Pages I want to link to, copying the address at the very top of the screen and inserting it into the URL address in the pop up box that comes up after clicking the ‘chain’ link but this did not work either.
What could be wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your blog is private and we Volunteers cannot see it or examine the pages in question. You will have to contact Staff. Here’s the link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ After you use the searchbox, under the search results, at the bottom of the page there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form.

I have a similar question to the one above, and my blog is not private. I’m trying to link to a previous post in my page “Table of Contents”. I try edit page, (visual mode), highlight the text I want to be blue, click the link icon and a box comes up, but it does NOT include anything below the line “Or link to existing content.” No Search box. Can you fix this? I need to be able to add links to this page.

@delayed2sleep
If you have created only Pages and not Posts then the searchbox will not supply the links. Please read posts and pages: the differencesYou cannot post to pages. Pages are static and sit outside the blog structure. With WordPress, you use categories to organize posts. There is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.

Thanks for answering. But this must be something new. And NOT better. I have always updated my Table of Contents page for each new post, with a link. And now you won’t let me anymore? That’s bad service IMO.
“When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts …” This I don’t understand, as I don’t think I have such a page.

If you can’t add links then please try troubleshooting. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.
Are you using http:// or https:// see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
Which browser and version of it are you using? Have your tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clear-your-cache-and-cookies
Is your browser version up to date? You can upgrade any browser version here.
http://browsehappy.com/Do you have third party cookies enabled? Do you have another browser you can try?
You can use this link to see if your Flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not up to date then this is where to download and install the latest version of Flash. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
Sometimes operating system and/or security system updates can cause problems so check for known issues. When you make adjustments to your browser settings — changing privacy settings, deleting cookies or increasing security — you will need to close your window and restart the browser before those new settings become effective.
If none of those work for you then please contact Staff.

Thank you so very much. I never could get the actual support section to open. I entered words into the Search so many times, but nothing ever appeared at the bottom of the screen about “Did this answer your question?”.
I tried your suggestions one by one and then tested getting the links after each new try. The one that finally worked was delete cookies. The pages just started showing after that (when I highlighted, clicked the chain link, entered a term into Search, and finally Pages showed up instead of just my Posts. It all works now.
Thanks a LOT for all the time you spent to help me out. I lost a lot of sleep hours last night trying to figure this out — to no avail, but now it’s all good!

If it’s not private on purpose, go to Settings>Privacy and change the setting. Then we’ll be able to see your blog and dicuss your issue more easily. Unless you’re not talking about the blog linked to your username ( http://jeremyjim.wordpress.com/ ).
In the meantime:
1) You can create a list of posts either in your right sidebar or in a page. Before we proceed to the details, you must tell us which one of the two you would prefer, plus if you want all the posts as one list or separated into groups of posts.
2) I’m not sure what you mean by “only supports 1 col”. Do you mean the notice “Your theme supports 1 menu” in Appearance>Menus? If so, one menu means one set of tabs under the blog title, not one tab: each tab is a menu item, not a menu. -
thanks for your help pan
i’ve the distinct feeling we’re gonna solve this thing!just checked my privacy setting
actually it already is set public but you’re looking at an inactive site
my current site is http://shemovesmedotcom.wordpress.comwhat i hoped to do was create another page for contents/index
a page whose clickable title appears on my main page just below ABOUT
yes, content items would be separated into groupsare we close . . . ?
-
We were looking at an inactive site because that’s the one you’ve still linked to your username, and you need to change that. If you don’t remember how, see point 2 here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/7-things-to-know-before-posting-in-wordpresscom-forums?replies=1Now, the contents page… If you wanted a running list of all the posts, it could be done and updated automatically. Lists of groups of posts (with appropriate headings, I suppose) have to be created manually, and updated manually each time you publish a new post. You’ll have to click on the title of each post, copy its URL, and turn it into a link. If you don’t know how to create links, see here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/A couple of possibilities for the contents page:
a) You go to Pages > Add New, create one page, title it Index or whatever you see fit, add the content (heading 1, links to posts group 1, heading 2, links to posts group 2, etc.), and publish it, The tab for that page will show up automatically under your “About’ tab.
b) You go to Pages > Add New, create several pages (one for each group of posts), add titles and links, publish, then create and publish a blank “Index” page as well. Then you go to Appearance>Menus, create a custom menu, add all your pages to it, drag them to rearrange their order and drag them to the right to turn them into subpages to the master Index page as shown here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-of-menu-items-and-creating-sub-menus
Click Save menu, select that menu from the Theme Locations pulldown, click Save. This will give you an Index tab that will reveal a dropdown to the other pages when you hover over it.There are other possibilities too, but more complicated.

thanks pan, big help
if you’re not on wordpress payroll
i hope you’re getting some kinda return from them
for all your work here!just one ques remaining . . .
can i adjust submenu font sizes so they fit?thanks again, pan
my head’s clearly too much in book pages
contents/index?
of course not!
you’re talkin MENUS in webspeak! -
You’re welcome!
No, most of us are volunteers. If you get a staff reply, then gravatar, username etc. will be highlighted, and it won’t say “Member” under the username. Member means fellow user.
You can’t adjust font sizes unless you by the Custom Design upgrade.
By the way, why do most of the top level tabs in your menu link to your about page? Was that intentional or not? If you did that to avoid the blank page I mentioned in b above, I only said so to get you started. You can make the top level tabs non-clickable, if you wish.

thanks again pan
what dedication!
should be worth some kinda stipend to wordpresswell, w/ that help of yours

some better way to give me those smaller sub-menus?i do have the cust design upgrade

even so, would it distinguish bet main & sub menus?while i got you on the line pan
my wife wants me to ask you
why she can’t subscribe to my blogi’ve clicked subscribe myself on her macbook: no dice
just to test i even subscribed on my own mac and got results
i do have one other subscriber so something is workingi’m excited about getting finally some sort of index going

a) To make “Authors”, Photos” etc. non-clickable, create and add Custom Links to your menu instead of the multiple About. See here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/category-drop-down-menu?replies=6#post-478269b) We’ve got rules here! For questions that aren’t related to the title of the thread, you must start new threads (with appropriate titles), so they can be spotted by others who may be have the same questions or who can give answers to those questions.
For your font-size question, you must select the CSS Customization section of the forum.
