Link to Wikimedia images
-
I am using Creative Commons images on my site and would like to link back to the wiki page to show proper attribution along with the image. The trouble is that when I create an external link on the caption of the image, an error message appears stating “The image could not be loaded”. If you right click and open in a new tab, it works fine but not what I would prefer for the end user.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Linking externally to a Flickr image has never been an issue but with Wikimedia pages it appears more difficult.
Example of link/image that I am trying to reference: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Precipice_Trail.JPG
Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been addressed previously. I couldn’t find anything that answered my problem.

Hi! It looks like you’ve landed on the support forums for sites hosted on WordPress.com, when you may have been looking for the WordPress.org forums instead:
https://wordpress.org/support/forums/As it is, I’m unable to replicate that here – the image links successfully using the image URL
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/Precipice_Trail.JPGand if I use the HTML caption from the Wikimedia page’s “use this file on the web” button, it seems to paste in nicely – here’s how it comes up:Fredlyfish4, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons Unfortunately I can’t check your site as it isn’t hosted with us! If you’re using the same “use this file on the web” option to get the file URL and the HTML caption, it is possible that another plugin or your theme can be affecting the behaviour; that can be worth checking.
As it is, I’d definitely recommend checking in with the WordPress.org forums, or potentially your host, as they’ll be better able to advise you regarding this.
