Link to WordPress blog automatically makes comment
-
According to Andrea Pelfini, a comment I received from him to my most recent post, was produced automatically when he included a link to my post within a new post in his Pegasus Descending blog on WordPress.
I can find no Support or Forum text that describes this. Is he correct? If so, where is it described?
If he is correct, it would be helpful for such a comment to include an indication in English (for example) of what caused that comment to be produced. The comment in question was entirely in Italian, which made confirming its legitimacy challenging.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It would be helpful if you linked your wordpress.com username to your wordpress.com blog. It’s easy to do. Dashboard > Users > Your Profile. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ and fill in the address of your blog and then click ‘Update Profile‘.
When a blogger links to another blogger’s post in a new post of their own a pingback is sent. It sounds to me like this is what you are describing. A pingback is a type of comment that’s created when you link to another blog post where pingbacks are enabled. The best way to think about pingbacks is as remote comments. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pingbacks/

I followed the first three steps and reached Your Public Profile – and the only mention of “website” my browser and I could find was Links “You can add links to any website you like here and they will be included on your profile.” Is this the place you meant? If so, do the following entries make sense: URL: http://ejdissectingroom.wordpress.com/ and Title: EJDissectingRoom

Re: linking your username to your blog
No. Unfortunately wordpress.com had just introduced this and confusing Profile pagechange. The page you want to be on to link your wordpress.com blog to your wordpress.com username is http://ejdissectingroom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php If clicking that link does not take you there then copy and paste the entire URL into your top browser bar and click.Re: the original question
I believe the other blogger is referring to a pingback. -
That link does get me to the General Settings page (also reachable from My Dashboard -> Settings) – but that page does not have any field named “website.” How about the My Dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings page which does have a website field under the caption of “Account Details” with a note under that field saying “Automatically linked when you make comments.” That sounds right. Should I enter “http://ejdissectingroom.wordpress.com/” there?

Done. The comment that resulted, the first line of http://ejdissectingroom.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/sherlock-holmes-the-fifth-servant-and-the-ghetto-of-prague/#comments did not change, but I did not really expect it to. From your 1:43 pm description, my guess is that (1) the Personal Settings Account Details website was set by Andrea’s blog already, which is why the link to his blog is associated with the “Andrea Pelfini” text in the comment that was automatically made to my blog; (2) the appearance of that comment would have been the same whether or not my blog had that website field set; and (3) now, when I link another WordPress blog in a new post on my blog, a comment identifying my blog will be sent to that other WordPress blog, but won’t if I were to delete my blog’s Account Details website setting.
If this is true, then adding that website to my blog’s Account Details would not help identify any future automatic comment produced in the same way.
Do I have it right?

Thank you for helping me understand the issue. As a result of our exchange, I posted a suggestion to the Ideas forum under the title “label pingback comments as such.” Please improve on it if you have any other ideas.
