Link won't save

  • Unknown's avatar

    Greetings–
Just starting this week I have been unable to create links in my post despite using the same procedure I’ve successfully employed 100s of times. When I go to the link editor (via the chain link icon), add the URL and try and save, I now get a messege viz: “Do you want to navigate away from the page? All changes will be lost etc.” And indeed, when I save, the link doesn’t stick. This does not seem to be effected by whether I specify to open the link in a new page.
Many thanks in advance for any help with this debilitating gremlin!

I guess we can commiserate, Ruby. Please let me know if you figure it out or get info from another channel and I will be sure and do likewise.

Gah, it’s driving me bananas! I’m sort of glad to see I’m not the only one having this problem though, thought I was losing my marbles. In the middle of editing my monthly blog giveaway, but can’t quite publish it without all the links!!!! Off to investigate……….

    Hello there,
Have you tried entering links into the HTML editor rather than using the Visual editor?
The first thing to do when this happens is to clear your browser cache and cookies.
The second thing to do is to upgrade your browser version if it is outdated. If that does not work then you try another browser.
The third thing to do is to check your Flash version and update your Flash if required.
The fourth thing to do is confirm that this is not a connectivity issue. The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com?
If none of those work then you contact Staff for help. Here’s the link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ After you use the searchbox, under the search results, at the bottom of the page there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form.

thank you so much for that detailed answer, i’m going to try all of that right now! I actually did see something when i logged in about not having the latest version of explorer or something….THANK YOU SO MUCH :)

You’re welcome. Do know that Staff are aware of the issue. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/can039t-add-links

holy moly, didn’t know i’d be opening this can of worms just by trying to link a few things! looks like i have to update a bunch of stuff on my vista and THEN upload the new IE9… aye aye aye!!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hang in there and consider also downloading Firefox 6.0.1 as I never have these issues. ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

you know, i have some friends that swear by firefox…but i’ve just always had internet explorer and am not that tehnically savvy so using something else scares the heck out of me! I feel like if I try to install it, I’ll jack up my whole computer! I’m not having much luck with the IE9 thing though, may just have to start doing my giveaways on my blogspot account again :( Thanks a million though, how nice of you to be helping people out like this!! Hopefully I’ll get this sorted out in the next hour and be back to giving jewelry and art away on here. You can enter if you like, it’s open to everyone worldwide! :) ……………*mumble grumble*

Some folks had success when they used Chrome. Others had success when they entered the links into the HTML editor rather than the Visual editor. The issue is one that Staff are working on so others have simply filed support tickets and are waiting for Staff to fix this.

Installing Firefox did not jack-up my computer. I’m on XP with IE8, which I never use. I cannot upgrade to IE9 as Windows 7 is required for that. I could care less as since I have used Firefox I will never go back to IE again. If I do download another browser it will be Opera as I have also used it before and it worked very well.

timethief: could you please just back off a bit? I know you’re trying to help, but you’re rather pushy, IMHO.

    @nbooks
If you have something useful to post into a thread that will help others then post it. But when you don’t then please focus on your own issue. Have you reported all of your details to Staff yet? If not, then I suggest that you do that now.

guys, i had no luck with all the internet explorer stuff. I just downloaded google chrome…BINGO! It worked and I can add links on my wordpress posts now. It’s really odd using something besides IE, but at least I have it just for wordpress now.

PS…timethief, you were incredibly helpful…thank youuuu!!!!
