LinkedIn and Reddit share / upvote counts have disappeared
-
The other day, I noticed that all my Reddit upvotes were gone and some posts that had thousands, were reset to 1. (I have temporarily removed the Reddit button from my posts.)
Today, I noticed that all my LinkedIn share counts were wiped out and there is nothing showing for any post. I contacted WP directly and received some well-meaning but not very satisfactory advice (a website where I could paste in my URLs to see how many times they have been shared). Ultimately the conclusion was that either I had changed something (I didn’t) or that it originates on the social media site itself.
I checked several other blogs and, like my blog, they had nothing showing on the LinkedIn button. I even shared another blogger’s post on my LinkedIn by clicking the button on their post. It was shared on my LinkedIn account, but their post shows nothing.
Has anyone else noticed this problem with LinkedIn (or any other social media site)? Is there anything that can be done? I remember when WP went to https, all Facebook counts went to 0. However, Facebook has a debugger page – https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/ – where you can scrape a URL and the counts come back.
I don’t care about the counts because of ego; I care about them because they are good social proof and will encourage others to read the post.
Many thanks for any help / advice.

I have exactly the same problem with LinkedIn counters and it is frustrating that WP aren’t being more active about addressing it.
My site is https://peterjamesthomas.com
I haven’t changed any settings either.
Could we please have a WP response here?
Peter

Had a support chat which basically was WP saying that LI may have changed something. Would have been helpful if they then checked if the API had been altered – must be impacting other people.
Can WP investigate?

i have exactly the same problem and struggling to get them back for linkedin. i did not change anything. the urls are the same, the counts simply disappeared all in once

Hi there,
We’re aware of the issue with LinkedIn share counts not being displayed. We’re working with the LinkedIn team to try and get that resolved.
This is not specific to WordPress.com, but is broken on all plugins even for self-hosted WordPress that display LinkedIn sharing counts. We’ll update here once we have more info on that.
We’re not aware of any problems with the Reddit button. Can you please re-enable it and give me a link to a post where it used to show a sharing count so I can look?

Great news about the LinkedIn button. The counts are back on my blog. Thank you for that, WordPress!
I have re-enabled the Reddit button. Here is the link that had the most upvotes (circa 5,000): https://mannerofspeaking.org/2010/05/12/some-chilling-public-speaking-history/
As you will see, it is now back to 1.
Any insights would be appreciated, but thanks again for LinkedIn.

Thanks for letting me know about the LinkedIn counts working again. We’re actually still waiting on a reply from LinkedIn, but it looks like they might have fixed whatever was broken on their end :)
If I click the link in the button on that post, to view it on Reddit, is shows only one upvote there as well, and it shows it was submitted only a month ago, so it looks like this might be an issue on Reddit’s end:
https://cloudup.com/cL55VkYh9sU
If I compare the posts on https://www.reddit.com/domain/mannerofspeaking.org/ to your site I the counts also seem correct, give or take an upvote or two.
Do you perhaps have a link to your post on Reddit with the previous number of upvotes so we can compare those? Also please try contacting Reddit support to check if they might have done something on their end that might have caused the counts to reset.

Hi @kokkieh. I don’t recall submitting the post to Reddit a month ago but perhaps I was testing the count function.
In any event, the post has been submitted and upvoted by several others. Here is a good representative link: https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/4q3rpb/til_people_in_the_soviet_union_were_so_terrified/
If you click the entry, it takes you directly to my post (just as in the example that you provided above) and you will see that the count is 4,492.
Perhaps it is something on Reddit’s end. Have you noticed this issue with other WP sites?

Hi mannerofspeaking,
There are two links to Some Chilling Public Speaking History on Reddit:
* This link was shared a year ago:
Count: 4,504
* This link was shared 2 months ago:
Count: 1
Although the title is different, the URLs link through to the same post and it appears Reddit may be counting the new most recent link which has a count of 1 (rather than 4,504).
Count information is calculated on Reddit’s end and we then pull that information into our sharing icons. Therefore, it looks like the issue is at Reddit’s end rather than ours.
A possible solution would be to see if Reddit can remove the newest link to your site.
Come back to me if you have any questions.

Thanks very much, Gemma. I appreciate the help. I’ll take it up with Reddit, though ultimately it is not the end of the world. I’ll post here if I have any information that might be useful for others.
Thanks again.

You’re very welcome! Yes, do let us know what Reddit say, it would be much appreciated :)

Hi @gemmacevans. Never got a reply from Reddit, but I am not that fussed. I have removed the button and the Reddit community is good about sharing stuff without the button.
However … I see that LinkedIn counts have disappeared again! Not just on my blog but on other WordPress sites. Do you have any insights?
Many thanks!
John

Thanks, Gemma. @kokkieh posted his comment on 16 January. The issue was resolved (at least temporarily) on 18 January. The LinkedIn shares only went missing again about a week or so ago. That’s why I wanted to make sure that someone was aware of the issue.
I appreciate your getting back to us and will await further updates.
Cheers!

That’s right. LinkedIn made a change to their API a few days ago which has caused further issues. I appreciate you are waiting for news so I’ll keep you updated with our progress :)
