Linking a forum?
-
I want to link an outside forum (probably phpBB3) to my wordpress.com blog. Where/how do I do it? Thx.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You may want to consider moving to a privately hosted WordPress.org installation. The free blogs hosted here at WordPress.com don’t have that capability. For more information on moving:

You can’t insert a Forum into your WordPress.COM blog – you can however link to an outside Forum from your blog. These are free forums, most have an upgrade option to get rid of the ads or whatever – I have no experience with any of them but have seen them mentioned in the Forum.

Although we have no FTP access to wordpress.com blogs and cannot upload forums plugins, you can get a hosted forum and then create a custom menu and include a custom link to the forum in it. The custom menu will display in the top navigation like pages usually display and can be accessed by a tab linked to the forum.

Thanks for yourr response. Are you telling me that I cannot create a forum elsewhere and simply add a link to it on my blog? Why would there be a ban on an outside connection?

No. As Tess 1 has said I am saying the opposite to you. You can create a forum that’s hosted elsewhere and then link to it form your blog in a custom menu.

auxclass and timethief, Akismet thought you were spam today, which meant your replies were hidden from everyone but you. :(
All fixed now at least.

staff-blorbo – thanks – I have been trapped several times in the filter trap the last few days – either I am having a bad week or they don’t like four links – Will Akismet learn that my links are not to some get rich quick site?
Also thanks to all who slaved over the outage yesterday and the rest of the staff for a great job.

timethief, you’re welcome!
auxclass, if that happens again, just tag the topic as “modlook” and “auxclass in spam”

Many thanks to all of you in the loyal WP helpers base for being there for those of us who are more than a little bit clueless, (and in particular for not being judgemental about it). I cannot respond to the advice or links as yet, as I need to read and work my way through them all, but thank you all for your help. I may well be back with more questions.
The problem has been that online there are so many google results that confuse WP.com and WP.org that for someone new to all of this, as I am, it’s easy to find yourself trapped in a blind alley of the maze, if you get what I mean. You think you can link to an outside log and then you find yourself in an info spot that’s actually talking about WP.org, and you think you can do a plug-in to WP.com, when you in fact can’t, (Hey, Alice in Wonderland anyone?)
