linking a free wordpress site to a paid domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I have paid for hosting and a domain page externally. I’d like to link my free wordpress page I created to these without paying additional wordpress fees. Is this possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there! Since you have purchased hosting externally, you will probably be using the stand alone WordPress.org software (which is free to download). The following support document is really helpful for moving from WordPress.com to WordPress.org: https://move.wordpress.com/.

Step 4 of that document specifically refers exporting your content from your current WordPress.com website so that you can import into your new self-hosted site.

Please let us know if you have any further questions!

In addition to what @separaryunited just wrote you can also redirect your domain name to your WordPress.com blog, that’s usually free with most hosting companies. The sad thing about this construction is that the domain name only redirects so your blog will still be wordweavingwriter.wordpress.com and you won’t be using the hosting you bought.

If I was in this situation I would consider investing a little money, upgrade the WordPress.com blog terminate the other hosting and move the domain name. That way you can use your WordPress.com blog with your custom domain name, good for you, good for SEO easiest to handle.

    Hi there!

It seems to me like you’re trying to redirect from your wordpress.com to your self-hosted site. Is that correct? In that case, what you’ll need is Site Redirect. It will require additional fees, though. There isn’t a free option at the moment.

You can read about Site Redirects here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/
And purchase the upgrade here: https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/

    I hope that helps!

    Hi there!

    Perhaps you mean “DNS”.

Custom DNS records are special settings that change how your domain works.

If WordPress is telling you to change the DNS with your host, then are you mapping your domain? :) It would be helpful to carefully read this support documentation: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers

If you’re trying to do Site Redirection, though, you won’t need to change DNS settings.

If you’re trying to do something else, let us know and we will do our best to help.

    Good luck!

  • Hi there,

I see you have two domain mapping upgrades with us, for wordweaving.com, and wordweavingwriter.com, so I assume you want your WordPress.com site, wordweavingwriter.wordpress.com, to appear at one of those domains, correct?

Adding the mapping upgrade here is on half of the process. The other half is to point the domain to us from your domain provider.

I see your domain, wordweaving.com, is still pointing at GoDaddy, so you’ll need to log in there and change the name servers to point to us the same as you did with your other domain. Then that domain will also start showing your WordPress.com site.

If that’s not what you’re trying to do, please provide some more details and we’ll help from there.

Hi, it was only the wordweavingwriter.com I need. Does it look ok?

    Hi, Emma,

I just went to wordweavingwriter.com and it pulled up your WordPress.com wordweavingwriter website. So it looks like you’re good to go!

  • Okay, so if you don’t need wordweaving.com connected to the site, you can cancel that mapping upgrade for a refund. Please let me know if I should process that for you.

The other domain is set up correctly, and it’s linked up with your Premium Plan.

Thank you! Yes please, I only need http://www.wordweavingwriter.com. Thanks Emma

  • Okay, I’ve removed the extra mapping upgrade and refunded you A$17. You should receive that refund in about ten business days, depending on your bank.

Thank you! Also, how do ( or where do?) I add my mailchimp code? It doesn't really specify.

    Thanks Emma

  • Click on My Sites, then click the Customize button next to Themes. Click on Widgets, and select a widget area that appears on your site’s front page. Click Add Widget, search for and add the MailChimp widget. You paste the code for the pop-up form in that widget:

    MailChimp
