Linking Categories to Main Menu
-
Hello!
I am helping a friend set up a website, and I am trying to accomplish linking a category directly to the header menu. In other words, I would like to link from a click on the main (only) menu to a category page:
Example:
Portfolio (category parent)
– Weddings (category)
– Engagements (category) etcI would like to have a user click on ‘Weddings’ and the actual ‘Weddings’ category page pull up, rather than a Page called “Weddings”. Hopefully this makes sense?

Hi there, this does make sense! :) You can create a custom menu for the website, with links to category pages.
To start, you will want to create a custom menu by going to Appearance > Menus in the site’s dashboard. Give your custom menu a name and click Create Menu.
You can then add category pages to your custom menu: Simply check the box of the categories you’d like to add, and then click Add to Menu. Be sure to click Save Menu to save your changes when you are done creating your menu.
If you get stuck with any of these steps, please let me know and I’ll be happy to help further!

Hi! Can I ask you another?
I’d like to post to a category, but only have SOME (rather than all) of my posts show up on the main page. Any cool way to do that?

There is a cool way to do that, but I have to warn you that it can get a bit tricky. :) Here’s why:
The front page of your site can display one of two things: your latest posts or a static page. Your latest posts will be all of your posts (rather than just a subset). However, there is a way to display posts on a static page — and there are a lot of options for what is displayed. To do that, you will want to use the shortcode described here: Display Posts Shortcode
This shortcode works best in combination with the Custom Design, which allows you to style the posts on that static page. If you have any questions about how to use the shortcode or how to style the posts that are displayed, please let me know!
