linking domain name and hosting

  Hi I know this is a pathetic question but I’m very confused,

  I have previously a website hosted by 1and1, it was built by someone else in code so I can’t update it as I have no skills. I have moved important stuff over to wordpress and now need to link my domain name.

  How do I link my domain name? Do I have to buy hosting with someone? Is it possible to do that for free? Do I need to buy my domain name from 1and1?

  I hope someone can help. Its for a basic artist website and I can’t keep paying the amount I pay 1and1 for it. Also laymans terms please I’m a bit lost in computer terms
