Linking domain name to my wordpress blog

  I want to purchase a domain name and use it for my wordpress site. Do I have to purchase the domain first BEFORE linking it to my wordpress blog? The wordpress site said it would ask what my blog name is to link it to my domain name purchase but I got to the checkout and it still hadnt asked what my blog name was.
