Linking domain names
-
We have a domain registered for 10 years with Godaddy. I have the option to transfer or connect my domain to wordpress. If i transfer, will I loose my 10 year lease with Godaddy and have to purchase it again with WordPress?
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

Hi there,
If you transfer a domain, you transfer the full term of the domain you’ve already paid for, so you don’t lose any of that time. Additionally, as part of the domain transfer process, your domain will automatically be renewed for another year once the transfer completes.
However, if your domain is registered for 10 years, it means it’s already at the maximum term a domain can be registered for. This means it cannot be transferred at this stage, because it’s not possible to renew the domain for another year. You’ll need to wait at least a year before you’ll be able to transfer this domain anywhere.
In other words, if you want to use that domain with a site on WordPress.com, you’ll need to keep it registered at GoDaddy for now, and use our domain connection upgrade to connect it here instead:
https://wordpress.com/en/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
