Linking domain .nl towards .com

    Hello guys,

I’m wondering the following: I would like to a website with the name (fake) stoeltraining.nl and also chairtraining.com.

I would like to open a website regarding a certain academy which needs to be in English and in Dutch. I would like to buy the .nl and .com domain and open a WordPress account to built my own website. However, now I’m wondering if I can open the wordpress account with the english name chairtraining.com and also buy the dutch domain (.nl) which will have a different name, but I want to lead this website towards the same website and offer this website in two languages.

Is it possible to link the stoeltraining.nl website to the chairtraining.com website and open the same website, but offer two different languages. English/Dutch. ?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

You can redirect a domain to a different domain. The .nl domains are not available at WordPress.com so you would need to buy that from a third party registrar, however you could buy the .com domain from WordPress.com (or a third-party registrar if you prefer). You’d then access the control panel for your .nl domain and set up a 301 redirect to the .com domain (the exact instructions on how to do this would vary depending on who you buy the domain from).

What you can then do is add a Google Translate widget to your site, somewhere prominent. Visitors can then select the language they want and the site will be translated via Google Translate.

An even cleaner alternative is to set up your domain redirect to point directly to an already-translated version of your site, by adding ?lang=nl to the end of the .com domain that you want to send visitors to whilst you are setting up the redirect (so you redirect visitors from (as an example) stoeltraining.nl to chairtraining.com?lang=nl. This also uses Google Translate but skips the extra step, though you need to make sure the Google Translate Widget is enabled on your site.

Another option is to set your site up to be Multilingual (offering both languages on each post / page, or a separate page for each language translation, or lastly creating two separate sites). Here is some more information on how that could look: https://en.support.wordpress.com/set-up-a-multilingual-blog/

Is this what you would be looking for?

    Hi Karen,
Thanks for your response. This is exactly where I’m looking for. Could you give an example of a good and trustworthy registrar to buy the .nl domain from?

  • You’re welcome :)

WordPress.com provides links to set-up instructions (when it comes time to point your domain nameservers to WordPress.com) for a list of popular registrars, so I would ordinarily suggest that a good starting point would be to take a look at that list in order to find a registrar that suits your needs. However, the .nl domain extensions may not be available from them. Your best option then and all I’d be able to suggest would be to search Google for .nl registrars. I hope this helps.
