Hi mjw3490
You can use your already purchased domain with WordPress in two ways.
1. Transferring the domain register with someone else to WordPress.com. Here is the support document for transferring your domain to WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/prepare-domain-for-transfer/
https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/Please follow the steps in the above link to get your domain transferred.
One important thing is Transfer of domain can be done only if your domain is 60 days old (period varies for each registrar you can check this with your domain registrar) If your domain is not free from the initial period in which you can make your domain transfer as per your domain registrar then we can map this domain to the WordPress site.
2. Mapping your existing domain Here is the support document for this that will help you in mapping your domain with WordPress:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
– Firstly you need to upgrade your site to WordPress paid plans as we can’t add the Custom domain to free plan.
To know more about the plan features and pricing please visit the link below: https://wordpress.com/pricing/Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain, or either transfer or map one you already own.
Hope this helps.

So I have to pay WordPress is one way or another? Either I have to transfer the domain name to WordPress and pay or I have to upgrade to a paid WordPress account? What was the point of paying for a domain through GoDaddy if I have to pay WordPress, as well? Should I just get a refund from GoDaddy and upgrade my WordPress account then…?

Hi mjw3490
WordPress has different plans and each plan comes up with its own benefits. If you want to add the custom domain to your site then you need to upgrade to the basic paid plan.
Should I just get a refund from GoDaddy and upgrade my WordPress account then…?
Warning: after cancellation, there is no guarantee the domain will become available to register somewhere else, and you may not be able to get it back.
Usually, when cancelation is done on the same day then it takes around 5 6 days for the domain to become available to register.
I am also tagging this post as ‘modlook’ for staff attention please wait for some time they will get back to you on this.
Hope this helps.

Hi there,
Let me clear up the confusion here.
If you want to use your domain with WordPress.com, you have to purchase a plan. Each WordPress.com plan includes a free domain credit, storage space, and access to live chat and email support. You can read more about our plans here:
https://wordpress.com/pricing/
If you want to use WordPress, the software, with your domain, you can download it from https://wordpress.org/ and install it to any hosting provider of your choice (like GoDaddy). However, you’ll still have to pay the provider for any hosting fees.
If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the self-hosted WordPress.org you can read this article:

Thanks guys. So let’s say I want to transfer my domain to WordPress in 60 days so I don’t risk losing it by cancelling my GoDaddy plan. Would I then have to pay the annual price for WordPress or would I just be able to renew next year since I already paid for the year with GoDaddy?
Sorry for all the back and forth, but this just seems like a super confusing process. Thanks for all your help!
