linking images to posts using urls

I have been trying to link images into my posts from Flickr and from SmugMug and find that it does not work. What happens when I use the long-form post is that the url I post into the header – or the title if I insert a title – appear in the post verbatim. They are linked to the pic but the pic itself does not display. When I use the short form ‘new post’ nothing happens at all when I past the url in and click fetch the photo. The only way I can make any of this work is by uploading the photo, inserting it into the post and then assigning it a click through link. That works but not nearly as efficiently as the url insert procedure would – if it worked as described. I have tried this using both Safari and Chrome, and I have gone through the checklist of possible issues – third party cookies, etc – but to no avail. I also notice that the screen images provided for instruction do not match the screens that I see on my portal into WP.
Is there perhaps a solution to this somewhere that I have missed?

You can get the image’s URL from Actions -> View All Sizes -> Download.

I followed the guide you referenced to a “t”, including the troubleshooting suggestions – using multiple browsers. Doesn’t work. If it had I wouldn’t have made the post. But to be sure I went back and walked slowly through the guide again. No luck. And I’m curious why what I see on my screen differs from what is displayed in the guide. For example, there is no “Insert Embed” button.
The workaround of uploading from my computer and then assigning the url as a link does work. The issue with this is that it’s just filling up my media library which at some point will become full and I will no longer be able to add images without subtracting some first. I suppose there is the additional issue of taking up needless space that could be supplanted with a simple link.
Any other ideas?

Sorry, that should read “Insert into post”, I’ll have that fixed.
What is the URL of the image you’re trying to add?

There are several URL’s but they all are coming from SmugMug.
This is the one that I was last trying:
It’s in the current post and is linked to SmugMug but that is as a result of uploading from my computer and then assigning the link to the pic

It should definitely work if you enter that as the image URL.
Would you mind trying it again (just publish the post as Private) so we can see why that isn’t working out for you?

And it did work. I think what it is that on SmugMug one must use their ‘get the link’ feature and not just copy and paste the url that is showing in the address window. That was the only thing I did differently.
