Linking photos in posts and space available

I was wondering, if I write a new post and instead of upload a photo I add it from another website, does it still count towards the space left?

    Thanks in advance :)

This is called hotlinking. It doesn’t not count to the space left for your account, but it can make some people angry.

If you are embedding images from legitimate off site locations like Flickr Photos, the artists copyright license usually permits such usage. When linking to images from other people’s sites, it could risk a copyright violation for publishing the image, not just the linking, and an embedded link does not qualify as a citation and credit if the artists does not specify that in their copyright license.

In general, while you think you might be saving yourself some storage space, it can get you into more trouble than it is worth, so do so carefully.

To truly save storage space, prepare your images before uploading so the file size is not very large. For example, the largest width most images should be on the web is about 1200 pixels unless you are a professional photographer. That’s viewed at full size and huge for a computer screen. If you are a photographer, then images that are up to 2500 is about the most, give or take, but less is better. Work with image compression rates when exporting as JPGs to get the file size down.

I’ve been using WordPress.com for over a decade and I have a photography site. I haven’t even come close to filling it half up.

Will be using photos from my Flickr account and Facebook.

    Thanks for the help!
