Linking posts to Pages which show up on your Navigation bar

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve read several articles on pages vs posts, but again, with wordpress.com I’m just not understanding the verbage, or something.

I want to create Navigation buttons at the top of my blog for a particular, static categories or topics and I know I can do that by creating a PAGE.

How can I get my posts which relate to that topic pull up when someone clicks on that topic from the Navigation bar?

I tried ‘ordering’ 2 pages on my About Me, and I can see them in the dashboard backside, but I can’t get to them on the blog itself. They don’t show as drafts, so they should have been visible SOMEWHERE on the blog, but they are not.

    Thanks~

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

With the theme you are using, there is a trick you can use to cause the top tab to become a link to a category. This trick does not work with all themes here, but fortunately it does with your theme.

What you need to do is to categorize the posts that you want to appear when a tab at the top of the blog is clicked, and then follow the directions in this blog post: http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/ for linking the tab to that particular category.

You have 2 posts, both categorized as “uncategorized.” Assign them to a category of your choosing, and when you add more posts, also assign them to at least one category.

    Background information:
Pages are static, for information that doesn’t change such as “about” or “bio.”
Posts are dynamic: every post is different. This is what’s confusing: posts are organized on a “page” called “Home.” That page is not really a page which you can edit—it is a dynamic lists of all your posts.
There is another sort of dynamic page called a category page. When you assign your posts to categories, then readers can click on a category (use a category widget or category cloud) and WordPress will generate a dynamic page with all the articles you have written in that category. When you add more posts into a category, WordPress will automatically update the category page. These pages are assigned specific URLs for each one: check the navigation bar to see them.

If you don’t want to use a category widget or cloud, then in your theme there is a little trick that works to make those dynamic category pages look as though they are actually pages you wrote. Open a new page, but don’t write anything on it. Instead just give it a title like this:
    <a href="URL_OF_CATEGORY_PAGE_HERE">TITLE_HERE</a>
Be sure the title has at least one space, even if it is only before a single word title.
Then readers will be able to click on a page tab that will look like an ordinary page but is in fact a category page.
    Details here about the trick:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/page-tabs-as-external-links/

Also note, if you made some pages, and published them, but they are not appearing did you make them child pages of the about page?

Yes, I did try to use the attributes box, and create pages that would fall in subcategory under the main category of “background information”. I thought, perhaps when I clicked on “background information” from the Home page, it would then show the two extra page tabs at the top of the ‘background information’ page, but not show them from the Home page. That did not happen.

So…. on the PAGE EDIT…. what use is the attributes box? What does “parent” and “order” really mean….and DO? How am I supposed to utilize it?

    thanks for your time

Ignore it for now. Right now, you want to master Categorization. Once you’ ve got the categories assigned to posts, you can fart around with sub-pages and attributes and so on. Get that working first.

Yes, study categories now. Just as raincoaster said. Categories are essential and very powerful tools for organizing your blog.

    As you said:
“…for a particular, static categories or topics and I know…”
Those should be the categories you want for your blog.

Write posts and assign them to categories.
(I don’t know what you are talking about “attributes box”?

    Study this:
    http://support.wordpress.com/?s=categories
It is a lot of info, but once you master it, your blog organization will fall into place.

    Hi!

I have the same question asthescripturesays. My goal is to post a link of a friends blog on mine. I’ve tried everything you’ve suggested. Perhaps the theme I’ve chosen won’t allow it? This can be very frustrationg (sigh) and I’m hoping someone will be able to assit me.

    Thank you.

    Your question is different.
It would be best for you to start a new thread. and at the same time, provide a link to your blog, starting with http://
We would need to take a look at your blog.

    1tess:

This is a great help. I’ve been roaming around in the support area, but hadn’t run across this particular information.

    As to the attributes question:
In my new page/edit page area (and perhaps it is only for my theme, Vigilance) under ‘publish’, I have a box titled ‘Attributes’. In this box is where I assign parent category and ‘order’ additional pages.

    >>>>> Below is the information in the box >>>>>>

    Parent
    (dropbox)

You can arrange your pages in hierarchies, for example you could have an “About” page that has “Life Story” and “My Dog” pages under it. There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages.

    Order
(drop box for how many pages you want to order)

Pages are usually ordered alphabetically, but you can put a number above to change the order pages appear in. (We know this is a little janky, it’ll be better in future releases.)

However, I believe the page you sent me to will address this, also.

Attributes is indeed unique to Vigilance. There are several threads in the forum on Vigilance, and they’re your best source of info for that. There are some bugs in the theme, as well, that people have reported interfere with the functionality.

    @asthescripturesays

Categories are truly a powerful tool for organizing your blog. They are also powerful for search engine optimization.

Vigilance is a relatively new theme, and I am no expert on the “attributes” part of it.
Raincoaster is a very long time insightful and expert volunteer. Her advice is golden.

I don’t think she and I are contradicting each other regarding the subject of how effective using categories is. And yes, pages and child pages can be nested as deeply as you like. In any theme on wp.com.

I’ll look further into the attributes, but at any rate, do consider the implications of using categories and have my best wishes for your blogging experience.

I wouldn’t bother with Attributes at the moment. Get Categories down. Once Categories are on your posts and they work, link them to your header tabs following the advice above. Once you’ve got that done, read the threads on Attributes in Vigilance and particularly follow the advice of thesacredpath, as he’s the resident expert on Vigilance. I’m using it on one of my blogs, but I don’t bother using the Attributes yet. I’m waiting for it to settle down and have all the bugs fixed.
