linking to and deleting pdfs

When problem started: Don’t know. Pre-Wordpress upgrade, I was able to link to pdfs no problem; now can’t.I can load a pdf to the gallery, however…
When I hit ‘insert into post’ (or whatever), the name I assigned to the doc inserts, but it is not clickable.
When I select the doc title and click the ‘link’ (chain) icon, only a partial window appears. It shows-insert/edit link (top right of window)
-insert/edit link (as though on a left tab?)
-link urlAnd that’s it. Nothing functional, no fields, etc.
Also, in my effort to make this work, I have now loaded 5 versions of my doc to the gallery. How do I delete those?
-
Before inserting it into a post, you have to click on “file URL” in the “insert into post” window so that it will link to the PDF when you insert it. WordPress will remember your choice and you will not have to make it again.

Thank you very much, thesacredpath!
With your input, I managed to get it linking –but now that link goes to its own page, listing the link again –only the latter opens the pdf. How do I get it to open directly to pdf as with my first two?
-
I would delete the link from the post and then add it back in. It sounds like the link code has gotten messed up.
-
Actually the one that is taking you to an attachment page. You mentioned inserting from the gallery thing and I think that is the issue. Gallery should only be used for inserting a group of images and it creates an attachment page. When inserting a PDF, insert the links as single files rather than as a gallery.

This is getting worse.
Now, not only does my ‘link’ option not work (as detailed above), but one of the working links I had is now gone.
1. To upload and link to a pdf, this is what I’m doing:
a. Go to the page I want it on.
b. Click the symbol for ‘add media’.
c. Choose ‘from computer’.
d. Browse for and select my file.
e. Click ‘post url’.
f. Click ‘insert into page’.The clickable doc title appears, but it links to a new page, upon which the doc title appears again and at which point it, when clicked, actually opens the pdf.
2. Despite having deleted all previous versions of this doc, WordPress is assigning it a new number every time. How do I get it to recognize this as a never-before-loaded doc?
3. Again, my ‘link’ icon still does not work.
-
Don’t click “post URL” or it will link to the page or post it is inserted into. Click on “file URL”. File URL links to the URL of the uploaded file.
-
1. In the post or page editor highlight the text you wish to use for the link to the PDF.
2. Click on add media button and locate the file you wish to upload and upload it.
3. When the upload is complete, click on the “file URL” button and then click the “insert into post” button. The file URL of the PDF you uploaded will now be linked to the text that you highlighted in step 1.
-
Ah, just came back to report I just figured that exact thing out! :) “File url” worked (just as you told me several posts ago that it would, argh, sorry about that).
Any ideas on items 2 & 3 in my 347am post?
-
That’s quite alright, and I’m glad you got it figured out.
2. Although you delete a file, there is a delay before it is actually physically removed from the database and I’m not sure what their schedule is for “packing” the databases here. That means that although the file does not show in your media library, it is still there in the wordpress database and the servers, it is just marked for deletion at the next purge/pack. If you waited 24 hours, then it would probably be gone and the file name would not be modified. The reason they don’t overwrite files is to protect people from accidentally overwriting a flle with the same name that they uploaded at an earlier time.
3. Could you explain further? What “link icon?”
-
An actual link to the post is needed since the times are not displayed on your blog. We are mostly volunteers here and have no backend access to figure out what post was done at 3:47am.

Re: numberings. Ah! Excellent info. Thank you.
Re: 347am, I meant my post in this thread (above). But you’re covering the questions perfectly anyway, so that’s moot.
Re: link icon. I mean in my visual editor, the ‘chain’ to create a link. ie. When I select a word in my post, then click the ‘link’ (chain) icon, only a partial window appears. It shows
-insert/edit link (top right of window)
-insert/edit link (as though on a left tab?)
-link urlAnd that’s it. Nothing functional, no fields, etc.
It used to work.

Try logging out, clearing your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and then try again. In some of these instances it is a cookie or cache problem.
-
thesacredpath, you rock. That did the trick. I will try to remember that for next time things go wonky. I so appreciate your patience and endurance. And the folks relying on my blog for program info would say so, too, I’m sure!!
-
You’re very welcome. The clearing of the cache and cookies is one of the first things I try when something goes b0rk and many times it takes care of the issue for me.
