Linking to database
-
Hi all,
I’m a new wordpresser, currently in my learning stage so wondered if I could ask a broad question!
Basically – I volunteer for an organisation advocating for more affordable housing and wanted to set up a website to quantify how much the housing crisis (in the UK – sure it’s similar elsewhere) has cost people. I’ve set up an example dashboard on Power Bi, but it’s clunky and I think it would be better on a wordpress. See the example here.
It needs to have a couple of functions – not complex but I’m still working out the best way to implement in WordPress:
1) Take user input, in the form of location (a local authority in the UK) and the type of property they would like to buy (the first column on the left in the dashboard)
2) Use this input as a lookup in a simple table which brings up the relevant costs based on user input (this is the backend of the dashboard)
3) Output this in the form of text (the middle and right-hand columns)
4) Be mobile-optimised and have the ability to share the results on social media (this isn’t in the dashboard).I’m working my way through an Udemy course on wordpress coding, but wanted to post here to see if anyone could direct me to relevant plugins, similar examples, or things that I should be looking to teach myself to achieve the above bullet points.
Sorry for a broad question – when you’re starting to learn a new skill the hardest thing is often working out what I should be learning, so any advice would be appreciated,
Adam

Hi Adam,
This should be possible using the right plugins, but I’m afraid this forum isn’t the best place for advice :)
This forum provides support for free sites hosted on WordPress.com. Free WordPress.com users cannot use plugins at all – that’s only possible on our Business Plan – so we simply don’t have the experience and expertise here to to give you specific advice on what to use.
The best I can do is that you’re likely looking for something in the online directory or database management class of plugins. I’m not personally familiar with any specific ones I could suggest, though.
The mobile-optimisation would depend on your theme, though all modern WordPress themes these days should be completely mobile-friendly, and there are many sharing plugins out there to add social media buttons to your content. Here on WordPress.com we use Jetpack for this.
For this kind of advice, please ask the WordPress.org community instead at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
In those forums you’ll find the people who actually make the WordPress software and plugins for that software, so they should be able to point you to which specific products you’d need for this.
Once you know which plugins you’ll need, you can either host the site here with us on our Business Plan, or you can set up hosting at another provider like Bluehost or Pressable – those are the two we recommend (https://get.wp.com/hosting), but the folks in the WordPress.org forums would be able to give you advice on other hosting options as well.
