Linking to Discussion forum software from WordPress.com
-
I have just registered this domain name for my blog using the wordpress register and map function and I would like get this hosted so that I can run a discussion forum. My pick is PunBB. My question is: can I go ahead and arrange any hosting provider for the new domain and switch back to http://www.changingwomen.wordpress.com as the primary domain until I have everything ready to go across to wordpress.org? Then I can slowly begin to move everything across. I prefer to stay with wordpress.com as I find it easier to use but I don’t think it will be possible.
My thinking is that in order to have a good quality discussion forum with the same domain name, I should get it hosted and rebuild the blog and link to the forum ie: http://www.changingwomen.org/forum, using the wordpress blog as my main website. I also have http://www.changingwomen.com.au registered. Any ideas? I know that this is a big ask, but I have been struggling with this issue for ages now and just can’t seem to work it out so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can actually do what you describe in wordpress.com using domain mapping. Map the domain http://www.changingwomen.org to your blog, then go to “domains” from your dashboard.
There will be an option “edit DNS record” next to the domain http://www.changingwomen.org. You need to add a CNAME record
CNAME forum xxxx.forum.com
where xxxx.forum.com is where your forum is hosted. At this point
http://www.changingwomen.org (and http://changingwomen.org) will map to your wordpress.com blog.
http://forum.changingwomen.org will map to your hosted forum

Thanks, I think I understand. I will have another look at the hosted forums and see if I can work it out. Thats great, thanks so much.
