Linking to my own posts
-
I just wrote a post and inserted links to two previous posts in my blog (one which I had imported from Blogger, and one I published in WordPress). It then appeared as a comment on the WordPress post! Does it always do that, and how can I stop it?
Also, is there an easier way to insert links between my posts, than opening the old post and copy-pasting the URL?
Thanks for your help

What you’ve done is self-pinged your blog; it’s just a comment that means a new post you’ve made is related to that one, so it’s letting people who commented before or anyone who finds it later know that they might be interested in reading it.
Some people find them useful, some annoying. If you don’t want it, you can go to Dashboard > Comments and delete it there. There’s also an FAQ which details how you can stop self-pings, but I just find it easier to delete them. Hope that helps.

you’re talking about a trackback. to delete it, just edit it and look for the delete option.
to stop trackbacks permanently, dashboard -> options -> discussion
uncheck this option: Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)
do note that trackbacks can actually bring more hits to your blog and acts like a reference in some cases, which may be useful to your readers.

Thanks for the quick response, very helpful. I’m still not sure why the second post I linked to didn’t get a self-ping (or trackback – are they the same thing?) – maybe it’s because it was imported from Blogger, not “native” to WordPress?

They’re basically the same thing. I think of a trackback more when I’m linking to someone else’s blog or vice versa than my own blog, but they’re both basically just a notification of a new post. Being an old Blogger post shouldn’t matter, but the system for links can be glitchy sometimes; they don’t always show up, but if you edit the post and save it again, that can help. There’s also a test blog which is quite useful to see if they’re working properly.

Hi thanks for this. I was experiencing the same annoyance and have unchecked the box as suggested by sulz.
Another related question – could the fact that I had this feature enabled also caused comments posted by readers to be tracked back on previous posts? Ie – they thought they were commenting on post B, when really their comment ended up on post A because post B was pinged back to post A.
Anyone follow that, and if you did, would diasabling trackbacks keep comments on the ACTUAL post?

if comments end up in the wrong post, it’s most likely your readers were confused, perhaps due to the trackbacks. if that’s the case, maybe your readers wouldn’t confuse and will comment in the right post by disabling trackbacks. that said, do remember this will stop trackbacks from outside blogs too; if someone were to refer to your post, you may not know because you’ve disabled the trackbacks option. though i think it’s possible to find it through your ‘incoming links’ section in blog stats.
