Are you running one of the browsers and version of them found here?
http://browse happy.com -
What kind of links are they?
Are they advertising or affiliate links which the software will strip right out? This is the guide for creating links in posts and pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
1. Enter the relevant descriptive anchor text you want to link to first. Note that “here” is not a good choice.
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link. -
It’s possible that you are referring to a post format called links and that you selected it rather than selecting standard.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/post-formats/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/If that’s what you did then edit the post and change the format to standard and then click “update”.
For editing see:

I’m using an older version of internet explorer (IE9) – I will try editing at another computer to see if this is the issue. My last post was in “standard” so I tried the post format “links” today, thinking that could be the issue. The links are to other blogs/blog posts (including a link to one of my previous posts), so I assume there shouldn’t be a problem with the type of post. Some suggested that, since I was able to insert links in previous posts, perhaps the theme I’m using is “wonky”. I notice that when I attempt to edit in “visual”, I cannot click on the icons for insert/delete link.
Thank you so much for your quick response.

Your issue could be using IE in compatibility mode (see 2 below).
1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html
3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/
(a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:
http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/safari-ipad-clear-cache.htm
http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/How-To-Clear-Browsing-Data-In-Chrome-For-Ipad_6.htm(b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled
http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654(c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.
(d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions
4. You can use this link to see if your flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not then go to http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ and download and install the latest version of flash.
5. Try using another browser.
6. If you are not successful let us know:
(a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
(b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
(c) Exactly what you experience including what any error reports you receive state. -
Thank you so much for all of your help. I was finally able to identify the error, and embarrassed to admit that it was a EBCAK (error between chair and keyboard). On my PVEF blog, the words in the “title” field become the link words. Now that I’m using the correct process, it’s working perfectly. Thank you!
