links and linking

I did some research in the FAQ and the forums for specific information on this topic, but no clarity. What is the positive / negative of linking to another site. Say if someone asks me to them,as I received last night, what would you recommend? I have already added his link to my site. Do you think I should keep and or remove?

Will do. You can link back to my site at http://theforgottenveterans.blogspot.com -Dan Rosenthal

What is a good rule of thumb?

Thank you for your time and kindness.

    Craig

for me i generally link to people who link back to me. there are those who don’t adopt that approach, but prefer to put what links they want.

there isn’t a rule of thumb when it comes to linking. just do what you feel comfortable basically. if you don’t want to link back, you’re no obliged to.

There is no rule of thumb that I know of Craig. It’s up to each individual blogger to ascertain if they think linking to another site will bring their blog more exposure or not. Also links can be removed in the future if you feel there is no benefit to having them in your blogroll.

Not to sound self-absorbed, but if I lik to another persons site, will that be a benefit to my blog, i.e. increase traffic and visability?

    Thank you again ladies.

I do not normally link to a site that has a page rank lower than 4 or 5.
Every site you link to has the potential of increasing traffic to your own blog provided (1) the site in question has a traffic flow and (2) you are leaving meaningful comments on the posts on the site.

Thank you Time Thief. Makes a lot of sense to me.

I disagree. I very frequently link to relatively obscure sites, partly because I know they’ll be grateful, and partly because I like to support people who may not be so well-known, but who are deserving of some attention. And once you do that, they very, very often become regular readers and supporters and link back to you more than once.

Linking to other people is the single best way to gain loyal readers and supporters of your blog, because you’ve gone out of your way to give them some credit. They then have a vested interest in your success, too.

I think any linking is good linking, i don’t worry about ranking
btw – just found a way to get a link for free [ link removed ]I’ve written about it on a few threads here – ‘cos the more ppl who join it the more hit’s we’ll all end up getting :)
