Links are not working

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to develop my site before I launch. I have set up a page called ‘galleries’ that have links to pages of photos of various subjects. Yesterday, when I clicked on the links, they took me to the correct pages. Now, ALL the links are taking me back to the ‘galleries’ page. What went wrong?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi! You’re referring to the menu at the bottom, correct? Right now those are all taking me to the correct pages. Were you able to resolve this already?

If not can you try closing and re-opening the browser, or even trying another browser to see if you have the same trouble there?

I have tried closing and re-opening the browser (Microsoft Edge). It did not help. I have tried Firefox. It started out working fine, but after making one update, and all the links stopped working.

    Hi there!

I see what you’re talking about. When you insert galleries using the Gallery block, it is not possible to add links to each separate image within that gallery. I see that you’ve added the link to the caption, but it will only work if you right-click on that link and open it in a new tab. This is because the way gallery images work is when you click on them (even if the caption has a link) it will open the image in a carousel mode.

In other words, the gallery block does not support adding separate links the way you’ve set up right now.

There are three options I can think of to do something similar:

    1. Use the Masonry block. The Masonry block will let you add a separate link to each photo within that block. However, note that you won’t be able to add/show captions.
    2. Use the columns block and insert three columns. Within those columns, insert the Image block followed by a paragraph block. You can link the images directly to the other pages, but if you want to make it easier for the visitors to click on the title/text, the paragraph blocks below the images will be helpful. You can add the link to the other pages within those paragraph blocks.
    3. Create a three-column block similar to above. But instead of using Image and Paragraph blocks, use Cover blocks. With the Cover block, you can add a background image with text on top of it. The text can be linked to any other pages within your site. I think this might be the best option out of all three.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Aisajib,

Thank you for your recommendations. Using columns and cover blocks seems to be doing the trick. If you don’t mind checking on my progress as I rebuild my “Galleries” page, you will see that I am having trouble labeling my links. The words are broken up because they don’t fit correctly on my images. The words are too long or the columns too narrow. I have changed the fonts to subscript and changed the alignment to move to the left. What else can I do to make the words fit correctly?

  • If you click on the text in the editor, you’ll be able to more precisely adjust the font size just like in a Paragraph Block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#block-settings
